Elliott WAHLE Obituary

ELLIOTT WAHLE A son of America, a man of Canada. Elliott came to Toronto in 1976, along with his beloved Helene, to be a part of the Blue Jays franchise and never left. After nearly 7 years working to build the Major League club, he was tapped as President of Toys R Us Canada. As employee number 001, Elliott oversaw the growth and expansion of the giant retailer into a 57 store behemoth across Canada. A short detour to assist in the restructuring of the fashion retailer Dylex, he headed back to his early roots in NYC to preside over the 'toy universe' by opening the flagship Toys R Us megastore in Times Square. Elliott spent the next few years as President of Babies R Us. His favourite title, Papa, brought him back to Toronto full time. While Elliott remained active with entrepreneurial ventures over the last several years, nothing was as important to him as dinners with his family or taking his cherished grandchildren to a baseball game. Elliott was a man of simple pleasures. He worshipped his wife, Helene, whom he met when he was 16 years old. He was dedicated to and adored his daughters, Melissa and Elyse. The sun rose and set on the heads of his grandchildren, Ryan and Leora. His untimely passing has left a hole in the hearts of his many friends and extended family members.

Helene,

Please accept my condolences on the passing of Elliott. He was a great businessman and wonderful human being. He taught me many things, chief among them how to conduct oneself with restraint, dignity and respect for all. A magnificent leader, he was dignified without being aloof; elegant without being pretentious; fun without being a jokester; positive without being a Pollyanna; much of what I evolved into as a leader I learned simply by watching, listening and talking with Elliott. RIP to a true friend and mentor.

To the Wahle family, I happened to receive notice of a new entry in Elliott's Legacy Book, and I couldn't help thinking, this is the first Rosh Hashanah without your beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. I read over the marvelous and inspiring comments made by so many friends who were distraught at losing him. The praise doesn't surprise me at all. When I worked side-by-side with him at Rider College in the 70's, I could see how focused he was on achieving his obviously great accomplishments. But more significantly, Elliott had a good heart. When I was hospitalized for problems with my blood-sugar, he and his roommate Greg visited me. I was so uplifted and touched by that gesture. Later on, I gave him a book, "The Family of Man" as both a thankyou and a wedding gift. Some people make indelible impressions on your mind, and he was one of them. May he continue to rest in peace. God bless all of you, Fran (Contardo) McClelland

To my dismay, I recently became aware of Elliott's passing. It has been many years since we first met in business while he was at Dylex. He was a terrific leader and I considered myself fortunate to have intersected with him at such an early part of my career. While the years have passed, his positive impact on me has not diminished. I believe this is the root of what we contribute in life. Thank you Elliott. Rest in peace.

I remember working at Rider College library with Elliott as my 'student helper' back in the early 70's. He had a wonderful smile and a great sense of humor, using his break-time to phone his beloved Helene. I haven't been in touch for years, which I now regret, but I'd always check online to view the many accomplishments in his life. I looked forward to the nights we'd spend working the Circulation Desk since he was not just great company, but a solid worker. May he rest in peace ! Sincerely, Frances (Contardo) McClelland

Tonight a friend told me about Elliot’s passing. I am so sorry and shocked ..
Elliot hired me when Tiys R us was first opening. I was one of his first hires.
He said to me: “I don’t know where I’m going to put you, but I like you “ and he hired me and helped me move up. Any oppurtunity that he could push my way , he did.
He was smart, kind, giving, sensitive , interesting, full of life like a kid and hardworking.
To Helene and your whole family, I’m so sorry for your loss.

It is with great sadness that I receive this news of Elliot’s passing. Throughout the time I worked with Elliot at Toys R Us, I always admired his confidence and leadership. Patience and compassion were also traits that Elliot had in abundance, especially as far as I was concerned. I also remember his devotion to his family. I remember one conversation with Elliot, prior to his leaving for Dylex, where we spoke about our families and his entire face glowed as he talked about his kids. There was such evident pride. To his family and his closest friends, I give my most heartfelt condolences for your loss. He was an exceptional man. A great loss.

I first met Elliott in 1974 when he fulfilled his dream of working for the New York Yankees. That began a lifelong friendship that endured even when our career paths diverged. I have such great memories of Elliott. What a wonderful man - so intelligent, so kind, so thoughtful, so caring - but always humble with a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.

I agree! He was the best President! I remember when we first moved to the new building it was raining and at that time I didn’t drive and the bus only stopped at Jane and Langstaff. There was two of us and he stopped to give us a ride to the office. I never met him till that day an$ asked where he worked, and he laughed and said ...really ! You don’t know who I am? Then he replied with his hand out “ Elliote Wahle” I was so embarrassed. He was a people person and a great leader. RIP Elliote

Elliott was one of the best leaders I ever worked for. As I started at Toys R Us as a cashier and worked myself to Store Director, when ever he visited he made such a positive impact on me. I remember one visit as I was unloading a truck for a new store opening, hands dirty he came into the truck and put his hand out to shake mine, I didn't want to as my hands were dirty, he said he didn't care and shook my hand. I have so many fond memories of him and all his visits. He came to the store once he had grown a beard I remember telling him I didn't like it,
we had a good laugh. May he RIP we have lost a good man. To the family my deepest condolence, sorry for you loss. He will always be remembered. Elyse sorry for your loss of your father, he was very special.

Helene, I am devastated by Elliott's passing and offer Judy and my heartfelt condolences to you and the girls. He was my mentor and my friend. There wasn't a professional or personal milestone in my life that I did not share or ask for advise on. He was ALWAYS there for us. He was magnanimous, eloquent, sincere and always present. A gentleman. He will be missed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Wahle family. I knew Elliott from his first day at TRU. Fair, honest and a total Mensch! A pleasure to work with and fun to play with too at ball games and tennis matches. He lead TRU as an incredible leader. Respected by all. Way too young, especially for a guy who rarely took an escalator when stairs were right there. He would bound up those stairs 2 at a time making fun of everyone still standing on the escalator. He had a rough ride at Dylex yet made incredible and hard decisions. A leader in every sense of the way. He will be sadly missed by everyone he touched. I know I will miss him. Too young to pass. Rest in Peace my friend. Best to all. Jerry Smith
