O'BRIEN, S.J. Rev. Elmer L.
At the Jesuit Infirmary in Pickering. Died on the morning of Sunday, May 28, 2000. He was in his 89th year and his 66th year of his religious life. Father O'Brien was born in 1911 and entered the Society in 1934. After completing the Novitiate at Guelph, he studied philosophy in Toronto. After his theological studies which he did in Montreal, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1946. From 1950 to 1986, he taught theology at Regis College in Toronto, at Loyola in Montreal and worked as a scholar writing scholarly works while residing at Ignatius College in Guelph. His simple but dedicated life as a scholar was punctuated by three scholarly items of note. In 1965, he was invited to edit the proceedings of a major conference which examined the convergence between the Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant traditions. In 1964, he wrote two scholarly works for which he is still well known today, Varieties of Mystic Experience and The Essential Plotinus. He will be remembered by the Jesuit communities he lived in for his quiet strength, attentiveness to his work and profound patience with his precarious health.
