Emily HINRICHS Obituary

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Emily on September 4, 2024, aged 45. She is survived by her son, Henry; mother, Mary; father, John; aunts, Jennifer Hinrichs and Eileen Harlocker; cousins, Morgan Young, Tommy Harlocker and James Milward, extended family and friends. Emily was a kind, generous, creative, and clever soul. She started her career in fashion, with an eye that was hard to beat, found her calling as a loving mother to Henry, and in recent years devoted herself to community engagement in White Rock, BC. Emily was a winner of the 2022 BC Tourism & Innovation Lab "Spark" Mentorships & Grants program, partnering with First Nations groups to create an Indigenous-themed, environmentally friendly, and inclusive playground. Emily devoted this work to her late brother, Johnny, and went on to complete a competitive program at the Simon Fraser University in Community Capacity Building. With curiosity and compassion, Emily was finding her way in giving back to community and those she loved most. Happiest at her family cottage at Cedarpoint, ON; in the waves with the mermaids is where we'll always remember Emily. A celebration of life will be held, with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Indspire.ca.

Dearest Emily,
You are always in my heart, I think of you every day. Your sweet, mischievous and serious face as a little girl, and the loving, kind, generous and creative young woman and mother to Henry that you became. Sharing egg sandwiches at the Coffee Mill, afternoon tea, and the colour lavender through the best of times, and the challenging ones too. I miss you, and will do my best to be there for Henry. Sweet dreams.
Love always, your Aunt Jen

I attended Inglenook Alternative HS in Toronto, and Emily became one of my best friends then. We had not been in touch much recently, but I will always remember her as hilariously funny, genuinely kind, smart and savvy, super creative, and so much fun. The world was certainly a better place with her in it.

This is artwork that Emily shared in class with us.
The image with the horse is from the book I Will See You Again by Lisa Boivin
The text image she shared from Dominique Falla.

Emily was generous in sharing creativity, inspiration, and stories.

I had the honour and pleasure of working with Emily during her time as a student at SFU. During every interaction, I was humbled and moved by her kindness, her vulnerability, her care for others, and her generosity with wisdom.

She made a profound impact on her cohort and myself personally, through her passion for her community and her presence. She will be deeply missed and I am wishing comfort and support to her family and all who are grieving her loss.

Emily was my Community Capacity Building classmate, and she led by example in how to be brave, vulnerable, kind, generous, wise, empathetic, strong, and a safe space for everyone. She was so beautiful on the inside and out. Everyone from our class will miss her so much, and we will always carry her with us in our hearts.

I write this as Emily's classmates from the SFU Community Capacity Building Certificate program sit and speak of Emily's great investment in love. How strong her commitment was to reaching into the hearts of all people that they could meet and talk and play. She took the time to always tell others that she saw them and appreciated them. Emily gave readily and heartily of her great love of love. It was a gift to walk alongside her and to hold her sweet fierce teachings in my recipe book for living with love for all.

I never had the pleasure of actually meeting Emily, I feel I know her from all the wonderful stories you both told me over the years...I know how proud you both where of her.
She was lucky to have you both as her Parent´s and Friend.

Emily was my best friend at Inglenook. I thought she was the coolest, most fun, sneaky and gorgeous human I had ever been in the orbit of. I was honored that she chose to be around me, because I really felt like she had the selection of basically everyone else. The last time I communicated with her properly, she was telling me the details of her fun wedding, and asking questions about what it was like to have a baby, since Henry was due one month after I had mine. I can't believe I just assumed we'd be able to meet up again when life had us back in the same spot. I'm sure that her energy will live on. It's impossible for a spirit so bright not to shine on through lifetimes. I'll miss you, Em.
