Emory SZABO Obituary

EMORY (IMRE) SZABO It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Imre (Emory) Szabo, on March 23, 2021, at 85 years, following a courageous battle with cancer. Devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, and friend, Emory will always have a special place in our memories and hearts.

Courage, determination, resilience and empathy are amongst Emory's defining characteristics. Emory fled Hungary during the 1956 uprising, escaping sniper bullets, crawling on his belly through farmers' fields and over the mountains to Austria, all the while assisting and protecting fleeing women, children, and elders. In the weeks before he passed, he recalled these events with a tear in his eye, still mourning those he could not help.

Emory quickly found work in Italy, then France, learning languages and trades along the way. He arrived in St John's, NL, Canada via ship in 1957. He settled in BC commencing a 36-year career at the Hotel Vancouver. There he met the love of his life Kathleen. They married, and raised 3 children.

Emory possessed uncommon drive and tenacity but was also open to new ideas. Always thoughtful and reflective, Emory had a positive, hopeful outlook on life. He was both a savvy investor and a thrifty bargain hunter. His love for family and concern for their welfare was paramount. He had a deep fondness for gardening, fishing, horse racing, and collecting vintage coins, stamps and automobiles.

Emory was predeceased by his mother Palne, and his brothers Geza, Viktor, Karoly, Zoltan, and Erno. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Louise Szabo (Moore), son Christopher Emory Szabo, son Andrew Blair Szabo, and daughter Andria Sabrina Barbra Szabo.

Emory is deeply loved and sorely missed.

Thinking of you dad. It's been three years now, but doesn't feel like it at all.

Remembering our first Christmas tree that was over6 feet tall and so bushy. You covered it with lights. It was beautiful. Now the cedars and hemlocks in the front and back grace the neighbourhood .Some were planted in 1975 and are well over 60 feet tall. Talk about a green thumb and
That applies to you,Emory.

Memories of dad and the things he would say continue to come every day and night . Whether it´s him periodically fixing something on the Osler St house or maybe tinkering with a car or making a home made change so the place was more suitable. I remember him playing the real estate agents at Osler, knowing they wanted the property a lot . But mostly I remember dad´s calming reassuring presence and pragmatic sanguine attitude towards life. This is something to aspire to and uphold . Maybe that´s the best we can do - honour someone to the best of our capability & the essence of who they were. For this is the meaning of life. Leaving a lasting legacy and having it carried forward.

We remember catching coho in Burrard Inlet and Crome Island . They are plentiful this year .
The garden is beautiful . There are raspberries and blueberries.
