Eric HOOD Obituary

ERIC HOOD MB ChB FRCP January 14, 1939 March 5, 2022 Eric died suddenly while on vacation in Mexico. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Clarissa; sisters, Margaret, Ray (Ron Ring); nephews, Eric Hood (Marnie), Andrew (Vanessa), Eric Ring, Alex (Joanne), Graeme; nieces, Nicole and Ashley; and grandnieces and nephews, Grace, Gibby, and Bertie. Born in Airdrie, Scotland to Robert and Margaret Hood. Eric, the eldest of seven children, moved to Niagara Falls, Canada in 1952. Following completion of High School in Niagara Falls, he returned to Scotland, where he graduated from The Medical School, University of Glasgow, in 1964. He practised family medicine in Niagara Falls prior to embarking on a career specializing in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He became a Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians of Canada, Psychiatry in 1973, and was appointed to The Family Court Clinic of The Clarke Institute, until the year 2000, during which time he held the position of Assistant Professor to the University of Toronto. Eric joined the Baffin Consultation Service in 1974 travelling to Nunavat twice a year until his retirement from the position in 2012. Eric made a significant contribution through his collaborative approach to empower and educate health care workers to understand, organize and manage a strategy to promote local mental health issues. He consulted to children's mental health services, for the Ontario Government's Social Services, the Children's Aid Society of Toronto, and the Custody Project until 2000. He continued in private practice until 2018. Eric's many friends remember fondly his love of skiing, camping, and his continued passion for opera, theatre, literature and the arts. A special thanks to Dr Stephanie Poon, her staff, and Andrew Gentilin NP, at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, for the excellent care and quality of life they gave Eric in his final years. If you would like to donate in Eric's memory, please consider Opera in Concert or a charity of your choice. An evening of remembrance will be arranged at a future date.

Just today I found out Dr Hood had passed.
I was a patient of Dr Hood for many years. He was extremely professional and helped me get through a variety of anxiety issues. I will forever be grateful for his support.

My heartfelt sympathy to Clarissa and family. Dr Eric Hood was a great mentor a valued colleague and a warm kind and cultured person. We would often ran into him and his sisters in Stratford , at Elgin Theater at the opera. May his memory be a blessing to all he loved

I never met Dr. Hood but he had a profound effect on me when I phoned him in a panic for advice. He listened and calmly helped me, for which I am so grateful.

I was just thinking about Dr. Hood and google brought me here.
He had such an impact on my career from student at the Court Clinic, to Child Protection Worker-then Supervisor. I always consulted with him on the challenging cases , knowing his advice would be wise. My son is now a child protection worker and I suggested Dr Hood could help him on a difficult case. So sorry he is no longer with us.
Such a loss, such a wonderful man.

I was trying to get in touch with Eric and Clarissa and I found this. I know my family would join me in sending you our love and sympathy for your loss. I have so many fond memories, growing up, of getting together with Eric, Clarissa and Bob Carr. You were all so sweet, kind, caring and funny as hell. I hope you're comforted by all the wonderful memories you have of Eric. He was a one-of-kind and a really really great person. Sending you lots of love Clarissa and my condolences to his family xoxoxox Winona

I will be forever grateful to Dr. Hood for the enduring impact he has had on my family. When I was a struggling new single Mom searching for inspiration and guidance to give my kids the best mother I could be, Dr. Hood provided insightful, effective parenting strategies but more importantly, taught me how to play and have fun with my kids! Both of my kids now have children of their own and it warms my heart watching them passing on Dr. Hood's treasures of wisdom to my grandchildren. Thank you and rest in peace Dr. Hood.

Eric Hood was my clinical supervisor at the Family Court Clinic in the mid-1970's and left a profound impression on me. A gifted clinician of course, but a warm and big-hearted soul whose approach to life has been an inspiration to us all. Condolences to his family.

Thinking of you Clarissa and condolences to Eric´s wider family and close friends as well. Eric will be sadly missed.
Eric welcomed me into his home with Clarissa, treated me like family, and he showed me great generosity, kindness, and compassion. They made all the difference. I really enjoyed our conversations over dinner, theatre trips, always learned something interesting - and had a good laugh. I feel truly enriched by knowing him.
I´m terribly sad I won´t see you again Eric but am glad you got to enjoy sunshine and a margarita in Mexico. You´re in my thoughts.

Postscript: it was Fritz Wunderlich that Eric was playing in his car. How could I forget? :)

Eric was a good friend of my late aunt Ruth Parry, and they both shared a live of opera. As a 10 year old child, I remember one occasion where I was seated between them in his open roofed car while he blasted Eric Wunderlich from his stereo. I just about shot out of my seat, not an opera fan as yet. Eric roared with laughter. He was great fun and I have many fond memories. I wish Clarissa and his family my heartfelt sympathy.
