Eric MCCORMACK Obituary

ERIC PATRICK MCCORMACK Author, critic and longtime professor of English at St. Jerome's College, University of Waterloo, passed away at age 84 after a brief illness on 9 May 2023 at Kingston General Hospital. An academic emigrant from Bellshill, Scotland, he arrived at the University of Manitoba in August 1966 to earn a doctorate analysing a work that influenced his writings and teaching for the rest of his life: Robert Burton's "Anatomy of Melancholy." There he formed the first of many deeply intertwined personal and professional relationships that would last through his career. In 1970, he and his young family moved to Waterloo, Ontario, where he would spend the rest of the millennium as a popular and entertaining lecturer and occasional department chair, known as much for his gently mocking humour and soft touch in marking undergraduate work as for his many contributions to a variety of literary journals as writer and editor. A wider public was introduced to his work with the publication of "Inspecting the Vaults," a collection of his short stories, in 1987 and, two years later, his debut novel "The Paradise Motel." Both won prizes in Canada and abroad, while the novel was on more than one judge's longlist for that year's Booker Prize. His uniquely disturbing prose style, full of dread, coincidence and searches for resolution, remains popular with readers of literary horror, as were his subsequent four novels and occasional book reviews. As an editor and tastemaker, he did much to create a wider audience in Canada and abroad for his two lifelong interests, Commonwealth fiction and magical realism. He remarried in his fifties and built a new life for himself, his wife, Nancy, and their many cats in Kingston, Ontario. He spent his long post-retirement indulging in his favourite pastimes: writing, travel, golf and dining with his broad circle of friends and loved ones. He is survived by his children, Michael (Elspeth) and Jody Evely (Derek), his grandchildren, Oscar, Polly and Mastewal Evely, and his brother, John. He also left behind a Canada-wide legion of former students, whose lives, accomplishments and happiness were as dear to him as his own. At his request, no funeral service or memorial is planned. Rather, a gathering in his memory will be held later this summer. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Kingston Humane Society. Sharing of memories is available at www.GFTompkins-Township.ca

Eric, you still owe me an A for knowing your "Word of the Day" back in 1990. I cannot thank you enough for your wit and wisdom and teaching that life is about so much more than appearances. Your work is deeply valued as is your sense of humour.

I was a student of Eric´s in the mid `80´s and I remember being in awe of his intelligence and enjoying his lectures. I remember him most from a book reading he gave at The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery reading from Paradise Motel. I helped to organize the reading and I remember that the weather that night was very stormy. When he started to read it was just raining but as the story got more intense and creepy, it started to thunder and lightning. Eric paused and started to laugh and said,"Isn´t this wonderful!" The audience was mesmerized, just as anyone whoever had the pleasure to hear him speak during his lecturing days had experienced. My condolences to his family.

I signed up for Eric McCormack's Canadian Literature class because nothing else fit my schedule at St. Jerome's College at the time. I ended up getting my Ph.D. in the subject, energized by what I experienced in Eric's class. His wit, irreverence, and caring for his students is unforgettable. He hosted Canadian writers in our class, including a rowdy Milton Acorn. I wish I had stayed connected with him through the years. My condolences to his family. I am sad to hear of Eric´s passing. I was a student of Eric´s at St. Jerome´s. His lectures were filled to overflowing with wit and whimsy. His novels and stories were dazzling in their originality. His particular sense of comedy and tragedy refreshing. He seemed to always be winking. Condolences to his family and friends.

Two of the most special, memorable, kind, original and wonderful people I had the joy and honour to know and love at a time in my life - Eric and Nancy McCormack. Forever in my heart and in a frame on my desk. They were as close as I will ever come to touching brilliance. Thank you both for giving me that. My sincere condolences to both of their families for the profound loss of this amazing pair of soulmates.

I am sad to hear this news. But, an incredible life - well lived! One of my favourite and influential English professors from the early 1990's. He had so much knowledge and he made learning fun. I adored him with great respect!

Professor McCormack was a formidable professor, you dared not walk into class late (he'd stop talking and watch you until you were seated), he challenged the class to better vocabulary, and generally challenged anything "normal". As intimidating as he could sometimes be in class, he was kind and encouraging to individuals. He was what a prof should be! All this, even if he had not written such wonderfully strange books. I remember him at University of Waterloo very fondly and we are less a wonderful human with his death.

My wife Sandra McCormick was a student of Eric's. I remember going to his home and having a scotch with him. He was an incredible person.
