HON. ERIK NIELSEN P.C., D.F.C., Q.C., LL.B., F.C.M.S.
The Honourable Erik Nielsen, Born on February 24, 1924 in Regina, SK, son of Ingvaard and Mabel Nielsen, died on September 4, 2008 in Kelowna, BC. Survived by his loving wife of 25 years Shelley. Erik will be deeply missed by his children and Grandchildren. He was dearly loved by sons Lee and Rick (Maureen) and daughter Roxanne (Scott) Temple and was the much loved and proud Grandfather of Erik, Thea and Tori; Connor, Kai and Brooke. Lovingly remembered by brother Leslie; sisters Margaret and Karen; nephews Douglas (Susan) and Leslie (Gwen) and nieces Maura and Thea. Sadly predeceased by his first wife Pamela June and brother Gordon. Erik proudly served his country with the RCAF in WWII and was awarded the DFC. After the War, Erik received his LL.B from Dalhousie University and was called to the Bar of N.S. 1951 and Yukon 1952; cr. Queens Counsel 1962; Erik was 1st el. to H. of C. (Yukon) in Dec. 1957 and was extremely proud to have served the constituents of Yukon for 29 years. Erik was sworn to the Privy Council 1979; Min of Public Works, 1979 to 1980; Depy. Opposition House Leader 1980; Opposition House Leader 1981; Leader of the Opposition Feb 1983 to Sept. 1983; Depy. Prime Minister 1984-1986; Pres. of Queens Privy Council 1984-85; Min. of National Defence 1985-86; Acting Min. of Fisheries 1985; resigned as Mem. of Parliament for Yukon 17 Jan. 1987; apptd Pres., Cdn Trans. Comm. 21 Jan. 1987; apptd. Chrmn., National Transportation Agency 1987; Family and friends are invited to attend a service in remembrance of Erik on Saturday, October 4th, 2008 at 2:00 pm at the High Country Inn Convention Center, Whitehorse, Yukon.
