ERIKA BRUCE Obituary

(nee Göetz, March 16, 1937 – January 23, 2026) Erika passed away in Ottawa, at the age of 88, after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Geoffrey F. Bruce (a distinguished Canadian diplomat); and her brother, Ernst Robert Göetz. Erika is survived by her stepsons, David and Ian; stepdaughter, Karen; and nephews, Stefan and Rainer. Erika's father was Ernst Göetz, and her mother was Margarete Göetz (nee Zinner). Born in Austria, Erika and her parents were staunchly Austrian and anti-Nazi. Despite having fled Austria, as the Russian army advanced, Erika's parents were determined that she would have opportunities to learn the skills to be independent and able to support herself. Erika continued her studies in piano, ballet, drama, art, and languages both in England and France. She immigrated to Canada in 1967 and gained Canadian citizenship in 1973. As well as her love of the arts, Erika also loved literature and language and she was fluent in English, French, German and very capable in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. She was exceptionally well-read in a wide variety of subjects and genres. And her academic achievements included a Master of Arts in archaeology (Sir Wilfred Laurier University) and a Doctorate in Political Economics and Business (Vienna). Erika's appreciation for, and deep knowledge, of the arts, especially opera, served her well as a cultural affairs correspondent for a major German newspaper (Die Abendzeitung, Munich), and later in life with Geoffrey, as consistent donors (Director's Circle) to Canada's National Arts Centre. In 2018 Erika gifted the J.E.H. MacDonald painting Distant Mountain (1928) to the National Gallery of Canada. She also served the Gallery as a Chair of the Board of Trustees. Erika's academic credentials and professional experiences and writing skills were evident in her position as the Director of Information and Press, NATO, Brussels in the early 1990s. She was responsible for NATO's formulation and implementation of all activities that promoted public understanding and support for NATO member countries; for example, she wrote an article, published in the NATO Review in 1994, entitled NATO's Information Activities at a Time of Increasing Demands and Dwindling Resources. The past held great interest for Erika, especially when she worked as an archeologist (excavations at Anemurium near Anamur in Turkey) and researcher, with the Canada Council, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. However, Erika was also very interested in Canada's economic, political and environmental future, especially the future stewardship of Canada's water resources. Erika did not want Canada's water resources to ever become a dwindling resource, and this interest was a major driving force in both her and Geoffrey's lives. Erika believed that Canada's freshwater is a strategic resource that impacts significant aspects of our national security, transportation and relationships with many communities. Consequently, in 2017, Erika founded, in honour of her husband, the Bruce Fellowships in Environment and Canadian Freshwater Policy at Toronto Metropolitan University. The Bruce Fellowships enable both graduate and postdoctoral researchers to focus on creating freshwater policies to support environmental conservation; and it also provides Canadian leadership opportunities, with respect to freshwater policies, in all levels of Canadian governance. Throughout her lifetime of important and interesting professional experiences, Erika believed and supported the ideal that all politics is dialogue which emphasizes that democratic governance relies on an open exchange of ideas, negotiation of interests and constructive communication. And her professional vision was also a personal practice. Erika hosted many delightful dinner parties with friends, neighbours and colleagues. The dinner conversations were interesting and insightful, often remarkable, and always memorable. She will be missed. A Celebration of Life will acknowledge and honour Erika's life and many achievements on June 17th at the National Arts Centre, Rossy Pavillion, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Please confirm attendance via email ([email protected]).

I am heartbroken at the loss of my dear friend-an exceptional, extraordinary woman who meant more to me than words can truly hold.
Her friendship was a gift I will always treasure.
I am grateful to have known her, to have learned from her, and to have been able to call such an extraordinary woman my friend. Her influence, her kindness, and the lessons she shared will continue to guide me, and I will carry her memory with me always.

Erika was an exemplary individual, and she leaves a legacy of brilliance and hope for the future. It is impossible to properly articulate the many ways in which she has influenced my life, or the lives of others. The kindness, generosity, and support she has given to the next generation of water and policy leaders in Canada cannot be understated. It has been a tremendous privilege to know Erika since late 2019, and to have been supported in my research through the Bruce Fellowship. Though I knew her for only a few short years, every interaction we had left me feeling enlightened, empowered, and inspired. My deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones; she will be sorely missed.

As a Bruce Fellowship recipient I have benefitted directly in my studies and research through Erika Bruce´s generosity. Through her vision and foresight she created a strong community of us water leaders and scholars through the Geoffrey F. Bruce Fellowships for Canadian Freshwater Policy. It was always a pleasure to be in her elegant and statuesque presence. So sorry to hear of her unexpected passing.

The Bruce Fellowship changed the course of my MFA, and introduced me to a group of people, including Erika whom I would never have met otherwise.

I decided to change my Documentary Media MFA topic to a water related one and apply for the Brice Fellowship. Even though I was not awarded the fellowship, I was invited into a circle of people so passionate about water that it turned me into a water geek as well.

I met Erika at the TMU water policy cafe. She not only engaged me in conversation as her equal, but was genuinely interested in my project and asked questions I had not thought of before. She widened my scope with her enthusiasm and curiosity. I only met her once but I am very fortunate to have held her interest and attention for that short while. She was an inspiration.

My condolences to her family and friends. This is a great loss.

My sincere condolences to Erika´s family. Although I met her only briefly through the remarkable Bruce Fellowships community she helped create, her impact and generosity were unmistakable. Her legacy continues to inspire me, along with a wide community of scholars, policymakers, and friends, and in this way she lives on.

It was with deep sadness and heartbreak that I learned of Erika's passing. Her warmth, vibrancy and joie de vivre deeply impacted me and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Our friendship and bond developed over the past decade through our mutual passion for Canada's waters, politics and public policy related to the Bruce Fellowships in Canadian Freshwater Policy. She established the fellowships in memory of her late husband Geoffrey's distinguished public service career leading many of Canada's national and international diplomacy efforts related to the environment, their shared concerns about the stewardship of Canada's water, and the need to inspire a new generation of young professionals to focus their careers on Canada's precious waters. The trust and faith she placed in me to realize her vision and ensure her and husband's legacy, has been one of the most honourable roles of my career. Over the past decade I had the privilege of sharing many special memories with Erika, learning about her accomplished life and flair as a raconteuse, sharing meals in Toronto and Ottawa, hearing about her interesting travels, and discussing her wishes for the Bruce Fellowships. She was always gracious and honest in our conversations which were enriched by our shared sense of humour.

On behalf of the Bruce Fellowships in Canadian Freshwater Policy and Toronto Metropolitan University, we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to her family and friends. We are all heartbroken by her passing. Her passion and commitment to protecting Canada's freshwater has personally inspired and changed the lives of many young people, generated leading-edge research on water policy, and enriched Canada's water policy community. Her spirit lives on through the transformational impact of her generosity on Canada's next generation of water leaders and all the lives she has touched. She will be dearly missed by all of us.

I am heartbroken to hear the news of Erika´s death and send my deepest condolences and love to her family.

Erika was my late mother Chloe´s best friend and, in turn, was a dear friend and mentor to myself and my siblings over the years.

I send my condolences alongside my many joyful, complicated and happy memories of a woman who was without equal. She will be terribly missed.
