Erika KERN Obituary

ERIKA KERN (née Glassen) July 9, 1920 - January 11, 2022 It is with great sadness that the family of Erika Kern announce her passing on January 11, 2022 in her 102nd year. She lived happily in her home in Scarborough, close to her friends and neighbours until at the age of 99, when she moved to Christopher Terrace in Burlington to be closer to her two daughters. Born in Mannheim Germany, she and her husband Willi immigrated to Canada with Willi coming to get established in 1952 and Erika following with their two daughters in 1955. Erika soon found employment at St. Michael's Hospital where she worked until retirement. She advanced in her chosen field becoming a registered dietitian and part of their teaching programme, mentoring many dietetic interns throughout the years. She was an avid reader of poetry, religion and philosophy and maintained an intellectual curiosity and passion for knowledge throughout her life. In retirement, Erika and Willi enjoyed many years of travel and time spent with family and friends at their beloved Huntsville cottage, a tradition she continued after Willi's passing in 1992. We would like to thank Christopher Terrace staff and residents, LHIN case manager and staff, PSWs from Acclaim and the palliative care team for all their support and kindness. Erika was predeceased by her sister Anneliese Glassen and is survived by her daughters Ulrike Kern Cleland, and husband Glenn, Gloria Baxter and husband Don, her granddaughter Mallory Baxter and her partner Andres Diaz-Valle and family in Germany (Linde, Andreas, Elke, Waltraud, Samir). In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: National Osteoporosis Foundation, Canadian Red Cross; Algonquin Park - Friends of Algonquin Park
