Ernest GAWLEY Obituary

ERNEST RICHARD GAWLEY Passed away peacefully on November 16, 2023, in his 98th year at The Meadows Long Term Care in Ancaster. Predeceased by his father, Charles Elgin; and mother, Annie Evelyn (nee Baxter). Beloved brother of Robert Ivan and the late Joyce Evelyn Gehon. Loving husband of Lorna (nee Simons, deceased) for 65 years. Beloved father of Sue Wilde (Jonathan), Kenneth (Holly) and Brian (Julie). Grandfather of Brittany, Kyle, Blake (deceased), Elizabeth, Bradley and Matthew. Step-grandfather of Christie; and step-great-grandfather of Haley and Jarrett. During recent years, he was the loving partner of Millie Luciani (deceased). Ern was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, where he was a farm boy for 13 years. After graduating from Weyburn Collegiate, he joined the Canada Armed Forces, serving in Canada, the UK and Europe. His academic career was as follows: Senior Matriculation Weyburn Collegiate; Canadian Army University course (McGill Wing); Khaki College London England; Honours B.Comm at McGill; Business Training Course GE Canada; General Management Course GE Crotonville, NY. His business career as a senior financial executive for 35 years occurred in Montreal, Toronto, Peterborough and Winnipeg. Throughout his life, Ern was an active volunteer on church boards, condo boards, community associations, Board of Trades, sports associations, and more. He was an avid sportsman, active in downhill skiing, senior's slo-pitch ball, tennis, curling and badminton. Ern coached boys' hockey in Peterborough, Humber Valley and Etobicoke Hockey Associations. All his life, an ardent fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was active in competitive duplicate bridge in Peterborough, Brantford and Hamilton. For business and pleasure, Ern traveled throughout Canada, the Continental US, Hawaii, the Carribean, Mexico, Bermuda, UK, Europe, Africa, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan and India. At Ern's request, no public funeral service is to be held. If desired, donations may be made to an organization of your choice. Many thanks to the staff at the Meadows LTC in Ancaster for helping to make his last days more pleasant.
