Ernest GOGGIO Obituary

ERNEST CRAVERA GOGGIO Passed away on January 11, 2021 in San Francisco. He was born in Toronto, Canada on February 24, 1923. He was one month shy of his 98th birthday. He graduated with a B.S. in Maths and Physics from the University of Toronto. Ernest joined the Royal Canadian Navy, on loan to the British Navy in World War II. Stationed in the Pacific Theater, he was a lieutenant serving as radar specialist. After the war, he moved to Pittsburgh, PA, and renounced his dual American/Canadian citizenship, and kept his US citizenship. In 1957, Ernest moved to Milwaukee, and after different engineering positions, in 1967, Ernest formed Pillar Corporation in West Allis. Throughout the years, he grew the company into an international Sales and Manufacturing firm, with several international manufacturing plants. Eventually he, along with Pillar, formed Sensor Control, which was traded on the NASDAQ exchange. That company grew to include many firms under its umbrella, and those companies made everything from MRI instrumentation, breathing systems for firefighters, temperature sensors, and a host of other disparate technologies. In 1990, he moved to San Francisco to be close to family. He was involved in a myriad of philanthropic ventures across a wide spectrum of society. Ernie is survived by his children, Ernest Charles Goggio, Jr. (Kristy); his grand-children, Nicole Carranza (Brian), daughter Allison Goggio, Rachel McKay (Kevin), Tristan Pulver, Aaron Pulver; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Connie; daughter Melissa Pulver; sister Anita Lannom, and brother Alfred Goggio. . There will be a private family service in San Francisco on February 12, 2021. A celebration of life will be held when it is safe for all to attend. Donations can be made in his honor to a charity of your choice.

I have just learned about Ernest departure and i am very sorry. I wish to extend to all his family our deepest condolences. Ernest and Connie were outstanding members of The Leonardo da Vinci Society and we had the honor and the pleasure to have them at so many parties, galas and cultural programs over the years. He will be missed dearly.

There are no words to convey my sympathies to the Goggio family. I hope nonetheless that you can take some solace in knowing that Ernie is in my heart and prayers, as well as in the hearts and prayers of the many friends you have at the University.

As former Emilio Goggio Chair in the Italian Department at the University of Toronto, I have met Ernie a few times.

I would like to share three memories in particular:

1) May 2014: during one of his visits, I arrange a meeting with Professors Julius Molinaro, Maddalena Kuitunen and Frank Iacobucci. This meeting was very much appreciated because he knew the professors and his father's colleagues when he was in Toronto.

2) I invited him in Toronto on the occasion of a honorary degree conferred to Roberto Benigni and his wife Nicoletta Braschi. I was a friendship at first sight and I was told he visited Benigni in Rome.

3) On the occasion of his 90th birthday, we send him a video congtatulating him. We also mailed him a picture a facsimile copy of the February 24, 1923 of the Globe and Mail, one of Canada leading newspapers. We also send him an original painting of Toronto Island, a place that he visited regularly (as he mentioned you us afterwards).

Rest in peace, Ernie.

Love you for everything you have done for my Department of for me.

It would be difficult to have a better or kinder friend—or in this case, friend and next-door neighbor—than Ernie. Many a delightful glass of Italian wine and hors d’oeuvres in the afternoon, discussing the events of the week or Ernie’s lifetime of travel and adventure. But then—Ernie taking on the Chef’s duties and preparing his remarkable bollito misto for a rapt audience that included Tina and me, and Italian Consul General Lorenzo Ortona and his wonderful wife Sheila. Ernie was adored by all. He was also shown such devotion and love by his house manager, Anna Lopez, and her gracious and superb son, Gary. We will all miss it all! Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.
