Esther M. Lerman of Rome
Esther M. Lerman of Rome Esther M. Lerman, 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at Rome Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, where she had resided since June of this year. She was born in Toronto, Canada, on August 1, 1911, the daughter of Shimshon and Deborah Crystal Farb. She was educated in Toronto, and married David Lerman on September 22, 1929, in Toronto. Following her marriage, Mrs. Lerman and her husband moved to Oneida, where her husband was in the furniture business. In 1939, she and her family moved to Rome, where her husband ran the Lerman Furniture Company. She remained in Rome until the early 1970's, when she moved to Coral Springs, Florida. In 2000, she moved to Clinton to reside at Alterra Clare Bridge until she was transferred to Rome Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility. Mrs. Lerman was a lifelong and notably involved member of Adas Israel Synagogue in Rome. Throughout her life, Mrs. Lerman offered herself as an unpaid worker for many national and community- related projects and causes, including the American Red Cross, Florida Special Olympics and as a special assistant for mentally-challenged children with the Florida school system. In recognition for her outstanding service to these interests, she was named as the 1986 Broward County Volunteer of the Year. Mrs. Lerman was also a life member and very generous supporter of Hadassah in Jerusalem, a women's organization that helped raise money to support hospitals and the development of Israel. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Stuart 'Spike' and Louise Lerman, Rome; two daughters and a son-in-law, Dolores and Bruce Smith, Toronto, Canada, and Joee 'Shirley' Teplitsky, Rome, NY and Tuscon, AZ; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1963; four brothers and four sisters, Nathan Farb, Anne Davis, Saul Farb, Harry Farb, Bessie Harris, Shirley Barsky, Bea Wilson and Herb Farb. Her funeral will be on Friday at 10 a.m. with a graveside committal service at Adas Israel Cemetery, Woods Rd., Whitesboro, with Rabbi Harry D. Rothstein, of Temple Emanu-El, Utica, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the MS Care Center, Hospital for Joint Diseases, 301 E. 17th St., 5th Floor, New York, NY 10003, Attn: Lisa Capolino. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of James E. Scanlon, Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan.
