Evelyn CARNAT Obituary

'Evy' Evelyn (Dubinsky) Carnat Englishtown
Evy Carnat of Englishtown, Cape Breton, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2016, at home, surrounded by family, love, and, music.

Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Newman and Esther (Goldman) Dubinsky.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Barrie and children, Uri (Kelly), Toby (Penny) and Daniel (Deanna), all of Toronto. She is also survived by brothers, Leon (Beth) Dubinsky, Englishtown and Leslie (Josine) Dubinsky, Bedford; brother-in-law Louis Allen, New Waterford. Grandchildren are Sarah, Ben, Sam, and Jacob and she is lovingly remembered by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Helen and Sylvia.
Evy was a music teacher and educator for many years at schools and summer camps across the Maritimes, and in her retirement continued her musical legacy by leading the Englishtown Chorale. She actively contributed to the Englishtown Community Hall Association, the St. Ann's Bay Health Board, and Celtic Colours. After her first cancer recovery, Evy volunteered with Reach to Recovery, helping others battling the disease.

Evy sang in the Temple Sons of Israel choir from childhood, eventually led the choir, and with her husband, Barrie was an integral part of the Jewish communities in which they lived - Cape Breton, Moncton, Charlottetown, and Calgary. Her activities in these communities included leading Hebrew School, organizing community meetings and religious services in her home, acting as Sisterhood president, and with her phenomenal musical ability, leading choirs and the communities in song. She and Barrie had thousands of guests at their Shabbat table over the years, welcoming local and international visitors to their home. In recognition of her service, she and Barrie recently received the Atlantic Jewish Council's Community Service Award.

The family would like to thank the community of Englishtown and the broader Cape Breton community, the Cape Breton and Atlantic Jewish communities, and the many other friends who have visited throughout Evy's illness. We want to thank her medical team - the doctors, nurses, and palliative care for their exceptional care and compassion.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, December 1 at 11 a.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton Street, Sydney. Burial will follow in the Hebrew Cemetery, Lingan Road, Sydney.
The family will be sitting Shiva after the funeral from Thursday, December 1 to Wednesday, December 7, at the family home in Englishtown. Shiva is the Jewish period of mourning where it is usual for friends to make visits to the mourners' home to offer prayers of condolence. The family requests visitors 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. from Sunday, December 4 to Wednesday, December 7.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Evy's honour be made to the Victoria County Memorial Hospital Charitable Foundation.
