HARE, F. Kenneth C.C., B.Sc., Ph.D., F.R.S.C.,
University Professor Emeritus in Geography of the University of Toronto, recipient of the Order of Ontario and eleven honourary degrees, died peacefully at his home in Oakville on Tuesday, September 3, 2002. Much loved by Helen, his wife of 49 years, Elissa, Robin and Julia, Maggie and John, and Jon Paul. Born in Wylye, Wiltshire in 1919, he was educated at the University of London King's College and the Université de Montréal. His academic career included appointments as Dean of Arts and Science at McGill University; Master of Birkbeck College, University of London; President of the University of British Columbia; Director of the Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Toronto; Provost of Trinity College at the University of Toronto; and Chancellor of Trent University. An Internationally respected environmental scientist and authority on the disposal of nuclear waste, his fundamental research interests were global climate and its stability. He served with a number of official bodies, foundations, institutions and inquiries in Canada and abroad, notably as Chairman of the Royal Society of Canada Commission on Lead in the Environment, Commissioner of the Ontario Nuclear Safety Review and Chairperson of the Canadian peer review panel on documents related to a proposed Canada/United States Treaty on Transboundary Air Pollution. He was an avid gardener, church musician and hiker whose kindness and gentleness earned the affection and respect of all who knew him.
