Fahiem BACCHUS

FAHIEM BACCHUS March 16, 1957 - September 22, 2022 Fahiem Bacchus passed away peacefully at home with his wife and his son by his side after a 16-month illness. He was 65 years old. Fahiem was born in London, England to Dr. Kazim and Shamsun Bacchus, and also lived in Guyana and Jamaica as a child. He moved to Edmonton with his family at the age of 12. Fahiem obtained his BSc from the University of Alberta, his MSc from the University of Toronto, and his PhD from the University of Alberta. He was a highly respected Professor of Computer Science, first at the University of Waterloo, but for most of his career, at the University of Toronto. Fahiem was a leading international scholar in the field of artificial intelligence (see https://web.cs.toronto.edu/people/in-memoriam/fahiem-bacchus for details of his professional accomplishments) and was awarded the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. He was an outstanding teacher and devoted graduate adviser and mentor. In addition to his professional achievements, Fahiem was an accomplished and inquiring cook, who took great pleasure in cooking for and hosting family and friends. He appreciated music, and was an avid swimmer and San Francisco 49ers fan. Most importantly, Fahiem was a wonderfully loving and devoted husband, an amazing father, a devoted son, brother, and uncle, and a loyal uplifting friend. Fahiem is survived by his wife, Jessica Davies; his son, Luke (son of his first wife, Liz Alexander); sisters, Zeeda Bacchus and Nari Goebel (Corey); brother, Clive Grant (David); and nieces and nephews, Zoie Broumas, Kostas Broumas (Tera, Eden, and Athan), Maria Allistrada (Logan, Mateo, and Sophia), and George Broumas.
