Farid R. AHMED

1924 - 2021

DR. FARID R. AHMED November 21, 1924 - November 16, 2021 Farid is survived by his wife, Jean Marie Ahmed (Buckley); his son, Neil (Gay Campbell); daughter, Susan (Michael Barker); and his grandchildren, Scott Ahmed (Sarah Stockdale), Andrew Ahmed, Savannah, Gillian and Emmett Barker. Farid was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He graduated from Alexandria University with a B. Sc. in Electrical Engineering in 1946. He travelled to the U.K. in 1947 and in 1950 he graduated with a B.Sc. Hons. in Mathematics from Leeds University, followed by a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry. He returned to Egypt to teach at Alexandria University. His fiancee, Jean sailed to Egypt and they were married in 1954. In 1955, he was granted a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Research Council, Ottawa. The following year he was appointed to the staff of NRC in the Department of X-Ray Crystallography. He travelled the world, attending scientific conferences and finally retired in 1989. In his Community Service the Ottawa Muslim Association was founded in 1960. He was President from 1963-1973 and again from 1983-1985. He was instrumental in the planning and construction of the Ottawa mosque on Scott Street. He was also an active member of the Christian-Muslim Dialogue Group from 1990-2012. Farid's family would like to thank the team of the Garry J. Armstrong LTC home and also the team from the Rockcliffe Retirement Residence who took such good care of him.
