Fiona EBERTS Obituary

Eberts, Fiona Louise (née Leckie)
October 30, 1946 - July 20, 2014

Fiona's peaceful passing on
Sunday morning has devastated
her family, most of all her
children, Alexander (Treny),
David (Maria), daughter Lindsay
and her dog-son Timmy; her
courageous and loving mother,
Mary-Lou Leckie; and siblings,
Lucian, Kirsten, Sandy Salguero
and their families. Fiona was
predeceased by her dear father,
John Leckie and beloved
husband Jake Eberts.
   Fiona was born in Weybridge,
Surrey and grew up in the Far
East where her parents were
reunited after spending several
years in separate camps during
World War II. She attended Le
Châtelard boarding school in
Switzerland where she
developed a life-long love of the
French language and a deep
appreciation for nature. While
working briefly in Brussels she
met and soon married Jake,
launching their extraordinary
marriage of 44 years. Married life
started in New York and they
raised their family in London and
Paris, spending summers in their
beloved Quebec. Fiona and Jake
brought out the best in each
other; they were intellectual
equals whose passions and
accomplishments were mutually
respected, supported and
encouraged.
   Fiona was an utterly unique
individual. Her vibrancy and
focus revealed a razor-sharp
intellect with a formidable
knowledge of the most diverse
subjects imaginable. Insatiably
curious, she read non-fiction
voraciously and could synthesize
and integrate wildly disparate
ideas. She had a gift for making
connections between the
knowable and unknowable, the
scientific and spiritual. She
possessed a rapier wit with a
near professional talent for
story-telling replete with accents
which left us crying with
laughter.
She was perfectly at home in
any situation - from enjoying the
Opera in Paris to fly fishing in
Quebec to discussing science or
metaphysics with professors
Her range of active interests was
breath-taking: supporting
women in Africa, promoting
alternative medicine, engaging
in Aboriginal cultures, writing for
the London Telegraph and
speaking at the 'TED Women'
conference. We all benefited
from her deep knowledge and
refined taste in history, art,
music, cooking - a list that kept
growing with no end in sight.
Fiona saw life as a transitory
physical phase in a soul's overall
arc. This view pushed her to do
as much and as quickly as she
could to educate herself and
those around her, to research
and stand up for principles that
anchored her, and to laugh and
share her joy at every
opportunity. Spending time with
Fiona was a privilege and an
adventure.
She was a guide, mentor and
friend - a nurturing mother to
her children and friends all over
the world with the perfect
balance of caring and neglect
Her unexpected passing has
extinguished a life force that
blazed through and left its mark
on all who knew or met her from
next door to literally around the
globe.
   Fiona's family will celebrate her
extraordinary life in early
September in Montreal with
details to follow. Expressions of
gratitude for her cherished life
should be directed toward
Campaign for Female Education
(CAMFED) in the UK and USA
(www.camfed.org) or First
Peoples House at McGill
University in Canada
(www.mcgill.ca/fph/).

I knew Fiona through Jake and had invited them to the Dubai Film Festival as my special guest on behalf of the festival. She was a light in the room that demanded attention just by her presence and demeanor. She was a LADY with old school knowledge and a modern twist on what the empowerment of women meant. I visited Jake in Fiona in the Ebert's Paris apartment and it was a joy to be with her in any setting, but in her home, it was magical. I wish her children peace and joy in the remembrance of such a wonderful woman. I apologize for the delay, but after Jake's passing, I signed off of all things related to the industry.

Dear David, Alex and Lindsay and all the family,
I was so shocked and saddened to hear today from Julie Arellano that your dear mother died suddenly in July - what a dreadful thing after the so, so recent loss of your father. I cannot begin to imagine how you all feel. Fiona was a great friend to me when I started my semi-life in Paris on my own, in the early 'noughties'. She invited me to dinner, visited me and suggested the fabulous Julie to help me in my apartment. I was already stunned when Fiona left for Paris for Canada and now this tragic news has knocked me and also Julie for six.
Julie wishes me to send you her deepest condolences - she did not think she could speak to you because of her tears.
May God bless you in this time of sorrow from Alison and Julie

What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget." George S.k Zokli

In your last days on earth, you cured and released an injured falcon in your sacred nature... Thanks for your wonderful respect of nature...

It's hard to find words to describe Fiona, but I was blessed to work for her in 1979 in London, spend time with her and Jake in New Zealand in the late 80's and then share a wonderful week with her, Lindsay, David and Maria, in Montreal and North Hatley just last September. An absolute privilege just to be in her presence.

For Fiona, my fellow extended family member. We shared many laughs and long stories over cups of tea in Katevale. I admired her vision in transforming the farm, plus her ability to put on wonderful family & friends summer parties. I miss her wit and intelligence, but hold her memory deep in my heart. Although the body is gone, her spirit lives on in her children and friends.
