Frances BATES Obituary

FRANCES JOAN BATES April 18, 1941 - March 20, 2021 Of Toronto. Fran left us peacefully in the care of Kensington Hospice, Toronto. An only child, she is predeceased by her parents, Frances Bates (nee Hansen of Manitoba) and her father Jack Bates. Upon her retirement from Queen's Park where she worked for the NDP caucus, Fran volunteered actively for many local charities. She made lasting friendships in her Roncesvales neighbourhood. She was a light in this world and will be sorely missed by all those who knew her. Her ashes will be scattered in the Rose Garden at the Toronto Necropolis and a plaque will be mounted on a pillar there. A celebration of life will be held in Sorauren Park at a date to be determined.

We were saddened to hear of Frances’ passing. A dear patient for years, we shared conversations and memories and laughed together every time she came to the office. Great personality and sense of humour. She will be missed, RIP

Here is a photo of Fran at about 1 year. I can still see her remarkable eyes in her most recent photos and my last in person contact with her. I want to thank all who have written something in this legacy space. It has helped me so much to know that others knew and loved Fran. In this time of pandemic when we cannot travel or meet in person to grieve, I feel that I am not alone in my sorrow.

Fran was a wonderful supportive friend, a lovely artist, a great traveller,
And she adored dogs! I will miss her friendly smile and wave as our paths continually crossed in the ‘hood’... She had a great sense of humour, the gift of always being herself, and was always ready to listen.... Fran, I miss you, we all miss you, but you will nonetheless always be in my heart.
Yours was/is a very beautiful, strong spirit... I feel blessed in knowing you..

I met Fran through work at Queen’s Park. I didn’t know Fran well but I liked her a lot. Great throaty voice and physical presence. She took no prisoners, she was comfortable in her own skin, she was deep, she was thoughtful, she was cool. Martha

I had the good luck to work with Fran at Queens Park.. she was not only fun to share an office with, but truthful and so realistic that all problems were 'solvable'. And in her retirement she continued to 'make a difference' in the world around her. Rest in peace, Fran. Hope you have wine and your artists brushes with you wherever you are. Miss you, Teressa Gold

I worked with Fran in the 90s. She was a kind woman with a wicked sense of humour. So sorry she is gone.

I have some photos of Fran when she was young and here is a nice one. Sorry we didn't really know each other but I was glad you and Aunt Helen managed to get back in touch.

Fran was instrumental in helping Vietnamese refugees settle in Canada in the 1970-80s. She also volunteered as an ESL teacher for new Canadians, also helping them negotiate the job market. She volunteered as a dog walker for a dog shelter for several years, then went on to volunteer at the AGO. Each spring along with her friend Gail she did the flower planting in front of her condominium. She also participated in the Roncesvalles neighborhood clean up. She loved dogs and never missed a chance to say hello to them. She took great pleasure in these activities all the while touching the people around her in the most profound way. She will be missed.

I am sad to hear this. I only met Fran once at a family reunion. Fran and my mom were cousins. I have my maternal grandma’s hand written recipe book; that would be Fran’s Aunt Annie. It contains a couple of recipes attributed to Fran an her mom. Thanks to all her caring friends for the love shown to Fran.

I recall a visit from Fran on our farm at Tilston Manitoba. Although I was young (maybe 10) my memory of her was intrigue. Intrigue regarding her style, her way of filling a room and her genuine curiosity of all walks of life. Sympathy to those lucky to have enjoyed her company more frequently.
