Frances BEER Obituary

FRANCES FITZGERALD BEER October 30, 1940 - April 7, 2022 Peacefully, with family by her side, in Toronto at age 81. Fondly remembered by children Jessica Runge (Arthur Cormack) and Denis McKim (Sarah Isbister); grandchildren, Zachary and Zoë Cormack; and sister Katherine. Predeceased by spouse David McKim; brother William; and parents, Samuel and Roberta. Missed by nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A devoted and accomplished teacher and scholar, Fran taught for many years at York University/Atkinson College, and made important contributions to her fields of expertise: medieval literature, nineteenth-century women writers, and children's literature; as well as to the Journal of Canadian Woman Studies/cf and Inanna Publications. Author of several academic and literary works, and a lifelong lover of animals, Fran was generous, determined, kind, funny, clever, modest, gentle, loving, and loyal. A celebration of her life will be held at Trinity-St. Paul's United Church (427 Bloor St. W., Toronto) on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 10:30 a.m., private burial to follow at Toronto Necropolis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Wildlife Federation or Inanna Publications.

Jessica and Denis, I was heartbroken to read this news today. Your mom was such a warm, vivacious person. I greatly valued our friendship and our mornings chatting at Sumach Espresso over coffee and pastries. She certainly held court over there, and her stories and vibrant mind were evidence of a life well lived. I am so saddened by this news.

I am so sorry for your loss. I admired Fran so much. She was kind and supportive, and I deeply valued her contributions as I worked on my dissertation in Victorian literature. She was a dear mentor whom I will never forget.

In sympathy,

I knew Fran for only 2 years but wish that I had known her for a lifetime. She had the rare gift of perceiving in those equally rare individuals the finer qualities of character. My profound condolences.
