FRANCES BROWN Obituary
(née Buell, July 6, 1941 – January 4, 2026) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Frances Olive Brown, loving wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother and tireless community advocate. Fran tenaciously battled Parkinson's disease and dementia for more than 20 years, facing each challenge with resilience and grace, before passing peacefully at home, surrounded by love and family. Fran spent her early childhood in the northern Ontario community of Longlac, attending a one-room schoolhouse - often accompanied by her faithful huskies, Peter and Spike. At the age of 12, she moved to Ottawa, where she attended Fisher Park High School. Fran graduated in Nursing from the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal in June 1963, earning the award for Ward Management. That same year, she married her high school sweetheart, David, and together they built a life in Toronto. Fran spent the next decade at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children in the neonatal unit caring for premature infants, until she stepped away to raise her own four children. While balancing the demands of a busy family of six, Fran embarked on her 40-plus-year journey as a volunteer and community changemaker. Fran's commitment to community service was exceptional. She chaired Extend-a-Family Toronto, a community support program for families with children with special needs, and helped establish the national Extend-a-Family Canada Network. An active member of the Junior League, Fran chaired the Toronto Junior League's Opportunity Shop and later chaired P.O.I.N.T., a social planning agency serving North Toronto. Fran combined her community advocacy skills and her professional experience as a nurse to make significant and far-reaching contributions to healthcare services. She was the driving force in creating the Ann Johnston Health Station in North Toronto. Fran brought together politicians, hospitals, schools, and social service agencies to turn a shared vision into reality and went on to serve as the Health Station's first board chair. After the Health Station, Fran served on the boards of Sunnybrook Hospital, Bloorview MacMillan Children's Centre and the J.D. Griffin Adolescent Center. As chair of the board of Bloorview Children's Hospital she spearheaded the merger with the Hugh MacMillan Rehabilitation Center in 1996 and subsequently hosted a visit by Princess Diana to the new Center. For three years, Fran served as a member of the Provincial Interministerial Advisory Committee on Child and Youth Health Policy. Fran's lifelong dedication to advocacy and service was recognized with numerous honors, including the Confederation Medal of Honour, the Province of Ontario Community Service Award, and the Bloorview Circle of Honour Award for Advocacy. Fran had a love of travel and adventure and a lifelong curiosity. She circled the globe many times with her husband, David, and embraced an active life, enjoying skiing, tennis, and golf. Fran was a member of the Granite Club for more than 50 years and a founding member of the Granite Golf Club. Fran made many lasting friendships in North Toronto, including as a member of the same book club for over 40 years. From 1984 to 2020, Fran, David and family split their time between Toronto and Lantern Hill Farm, a working farm north of the city where they often hosted extended family and friends and created countless memories. Fran is survived by her beloved husband, David Brown; her children, Michael (Julie), Cathy MacMillan (Doug), Julie Uyeda (Carey), and Rebecca Curwen (Chris); and nine adored grandchildren: Samuel, Grace, Thomas, Hannah, Nik, Tamiko, Raiden, Sydney, and Kyla. The family is deeply grateful for the support over the past eight years from Michelle and the exceptional team at Hospall Homecare, including Erwin, Julianna, Zohreh, Rosemary, Haleh, Abbie, Jessica and many others. The family would also like to thank the palliative care team from St. Elizabeth Healthcare, including Tatianna, Sarah, Brittany and PSW support by Julie, Victoria and Rani. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Parkinson Canada or a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Fran's Life will be held in Toronto in the Spring.
