FRANCES DEACON Obituary

After a long and wonderful life of loving and giving, Frances "Fran" Deacon died on Saturday November 23, 2024 at the age of 102. She was the adored wife of the late Fraser Deacon and much-loved sister to her late brother Bill Ward. Fran was the very proud mother of John (Deborah), Fraser (Stephanie), Greg (deceased) and Bill (Janet). She will be dearly missed by her 14 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren and fondly remembered by her 40 nieces and nephews. As the last surviving member of her generation of Deacons and Wards, her passing represents to us the end of an era. Renowned for her gracious hospitality, her door was always open to guests, be it in Rosedale or Lawrence Park or the cottage on Canniff Island. Her story telling was legendary. Fran was a long-time member of Rosedale United Church, always sitting in the fourth pew, renowned for (and proud of) the ham sandwiches she prepared for the Holly Berry Fair. She was a lifelong volunteer, contributing to many organizations, and well into her 90's she worked at the Out of the Cold Program, ensuring all were warmly received. Fran was a force. She was as sharp as a tack, read the Globe and Mail daily (without glasses), and kept a watchful eye on all that was going on around her, ensuring that everything – and everyone – was up to standard. The family is grateful to Dr. Katrin Dolganova of HouseCalls, and Fran's extraordinary caregivers, Airleen, Georgia, Marilyn, Leanora, Monica and others. Fran often said she wouldn't have lasted as long as she did if not for their loving care and support of the last seven years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Toronto Foundation which was established by her husband Fraser more than 40 years ago. A celebration of Fran's life will be held on Saturday, January 4th at Rosedale United Church 159 Roxborough Drive (at Glen Road). The family will receive friends and family at 1 pm, and the service will begin at 2 pm with a reception to follow. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

Dearest Deacon Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Fran's passing and indeed of Greg's passing as well. God Bless you all at this time of grieving during Christmastime. I will attend the service to show my respect and sorrow for your loss.
My memory of Fran is she was so kind, but strong! Her invitation to visit the cottage was with Bill who was my friend as a kid and musical chum with Carol in our teens was to have a picnic on the rock with everybody- all the boys et all...I must have been 8 or around that age and she asked me to help make the peanut butter pinwheel and sliced banana sandwiches. My gosh, I still make them for the kids! She was a strong upright moral abiding person who liked things done well! I remember many fun days like that swimming off your grand dock at the cottage and running through the upstairs with all the doors to each room and your dad in a Speedo swimming or sunning who was probable the only one who could get away with that as he was always in the best shape! And that's not an understatement! Some where in the past our great grandmother's were sisters from the Deacon clan emigrating from Europe, so Bill and dear Greg who were my party friends up North when we were young and calling each other "Cuz" so we are something like 3 times removed, but indeed related from my maternal Granny Palmer's side of the family.
Fran lived a good long life and was a good example to us all. I can only imagine how sad everyone must be to miss her now, but aren't we lucky to have her treasured memory?
Sending love and prayers, Nicole

Fran and her husband Fraser were very good friends of my late parents, Norm and Kathryn (Gooderham) Donaldson. She was a wonderful and yes a strong matriarch of the Deacon clan.

Fran was certainly a force! We miss the Deacons on Canniff but treasure the gifts that Fran distributed to neighbouring cottages before her departure.

Growing up at Rosedale United Church, the Deacon family was ever present in the fourth pew. Being the same age as Greg, I knew him the best - and he kindly came to my mother´s funeral at Rosedale United in 1987 - last time I saw him.
My thoughts are with you all as you take over as the "older" generation now - tough shoes to fill, but you had fine leaders to learn from.

Thinking of you all as we say good bye to a wonderful lady and friend.
Muskoka hasn't been the same without her.
