Francis SUTTON Obituary

FRANCIS BURK SUTTON, QC, LLB September 16, 1931 - February 24, 2021 Early on Wednesday morning, at Mount Sinai Hospital, our beloved Fran went gently into that good night. Son of the late musician and organist Francis Sutton FRCM, FRCO, and the late Eva Kathleen Sutton (née Burk). Above all else Fran loved his family: his wife of 61 years, Barbara (née Ham), their children: Amanda (Graham Tarling), Bethany, Alexandra (Patrick Imbert), Camilla (Trent Smith), Trevor (Joy Zolis) and grandchildren: Gemma and Callum Tarling, Zoë and Matti Goodwin-Sutton, Mackenzie and Jamieson Crowe, Burkleigh and Ty Smith and Genesis Sutton. His brother-in-law Dr. Trevor Ham and his wife Stefanie (née Ackermann) and their family will miss him very much. Fran's greatest pleasure was to scoop up the entire family for a wonderful trip, travelling to Quebec, New York, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, England, France, Italy (especially Venice), Spain, Morocco and every city in between. Fran loved theatre and all Broadway musicals, beautiful hotels and outstanding restaurants. Special family occasions were celebrated with great joie de vivre at Montebello and Deerhurst Resort. Summer weekends were enjoyed with family and friends at Marshall's Bay and he loved the house in Napanee. We have a wealth of happy memories. Fran grew up in Bowmanville, Sault Ste. Marie, and Toronto. A natural athlete, he excelled at tennis and basketball. After attending Malvern Collegiate in Toronto, he graduated from Trinity College, U of T in 1954 and from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1958 and was then called to the Ontario Bar. After articling with Bell, Griffith, and Temple, Fran joined the firm of Quirk, McGillicuddy, which became Quirk, McGillicuddy and Sutton, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019. Fran specialized in real estate, wills and estates and thoroughly enjoyed his practice, working and keeping in touch with the office (Julie, Eva, and Josie) until the day before his death. A small family service has taken place at St. Thomas's Church, Huron Street. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Mount Sinai Hospital where Fran received such exemplary care. Kind and loving, Fran was devoted, patient, generous, and full of enthusiasm. One of a kind, he will always live in our hearts and lives.

Mr. Sutton was the lawyer for our family. We always appreciated his straightforward demeanour and sense of humour. It does not surprise me that to he was working until the end. He will be missed.

Our sincere condolences to the Sutton family. Our family, through 3 generations, was a client of “Sutton” for over 50 years. What we remember the most is his friendly demeanor, easy rapport, great sense of humour, and sharp mental acuity (we could never keep up with him; and, his preference to manually sum numbers on paper than use a calculator) – we always felt a strong connection to him. In between our legal work, we enjoyed listening to his personal stories he shared with us over the years, like his wife as magazine editor and his parents feeling he paid too much for his first house (when we felt we did). As a small boy, I remember seeing a younger Mr. Sutton and his beautiful family touring Niagara Falls, seemingly having a great time, like us. We would also like to recognize here Mrs. Spizzirri, who we and especially my late mother were fond of. We also remember the friendly “familial” banter in the office with Sutton telling Mrs. Spizzirri what to do and Mrs. Spizzirri correcting him, like a mother reprimanding her young son, and Sutton yielding with, “Okay, okay, okay!!!”. It was a pleasure working with Mr. Sutton who we will always fondly remember. He was a most remarkable man for which we feel blessed for having known.

We are deeply sorry to have just heard about the passing of Mr. Sutton. We have known Mr. Sutton for over 60 years. He was our family's first and only legal counsel , adviser and friend. After I married and started my own family Mr. Sutton continued to help us with legal matters and offered extensive advice and was always patient and generous with his time. What we will miss most is his kind and friendly nature. He always had a smile for us and asked about our family before anything else. God bless and may he rest in peace.

We would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the Sutton family on the passing of Mr. Francis Sutton. Mr. Sutton was one of a kind who provided legal services to our extended family for over 40 years. He was an absolute pleasure, sweet and sharp! He guided us through real estate transactions, POA's, the writing of wills, the reading and interpretation of a will, and the adoption of our child. Our meetings always started with his checking in on my mother and sharing his family updates. It was obvious that he truly loved his work and we were blessed to receive his sound guidance and legal expertise. May your hearts be filled with beautiful memories of a lovely, kind man.

I would like to say, Thank You, Mr Sutton. I am a tenant of his, and I would not have been able to continue living in Toronto, without his generosity and kindness. Mr. Sutton has kept his rents very very affordable, always. Without this, I would have had to leave Toronto, leave my business, possibly leave my daughter, and try to establish myself all over again somewhere else. Clearly, from the memorial above, this kindness and generosity marks all aspects of his life. Thank you, Mr Sutton. You have been a life-saver. My condolences to all the Sutton family. You have lost a good person.

What a sad day, the passing of Fran Sutton. Mr. Sutton helped me with some difficult legal issues when I was a single parent raising my two boys. His sound legal advice, care and affordability helped me tremendously. Through his service and extraordinary availability, (usually took my calls immediately) I felt a huge weight come off my shoulders. When you are raising kids alone that kind of support is invaluable. I will always feel deep gratitude to him and his team. As a client, you could tell he was special, a good human, trustworthy, kind and dedicated to quality services. My deepest sympathies to the family.

I have never met Mr. Sutton but he quite clearly lived a wonderful and full life filled with love, joy and adventure. And I know he was a good man because he and Barbara raised my wonderful friend Bethany, who in turn is bringing up two amazing daughters, Zoe and Matti. That's a remarkable accomplishment. My condolences to the family.

"Uncle Fran", as I called him when I was little, was my godfather for over 58 years. He and my dad, Robert (Bob), a law school chum, took a very memorable road trip across Canada and the US, which my dad would tell us about.
I was very lucky to get to know him in these last nine years as he took care of each of my parents' estates. MY sister Sandra, brother Doug (a school chum of Bethany's) and I will miss him very much. Much love from the Langdons.
