BENNETT, G. Frank, P.Eng., F.E.I.C.
Passed away in Halifax on August 17th, 2002, in his 95th year. Born in Ottawa October 26, 1907 he attended Ottawa public schools and graduated from McGill in 1931 with a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. He joined Westinghouse in Hamilton and then Halifax where he met his future wife Mona Wallace. He is survived by Mona and their children – one son, Peter, Toronto (wife Martha and son Andrew), and six daughters: Penny Bennett, Mutare, Zimbabwe (son, Maj. Rick Dugan, US Army), Susan Bennett, Halifax (children Dr. P.J. Murphy, Heather Murphy and Ryan Murphy), Jane Bowren, Sotogrande, Spain (husband David, children James Rafuse and Lori Rafuse), Katherine Bennett, Halifax, Christine Goodday, Halifax (husband Dr. Reg and children Melanie, Amy, Victoria and Hugh) and Vicki Bennett-Arsenault, Vancouver (husband Theo and sons Ben Ben, Jordie and Luke). He was predeceased by his sister, Lorraine Shorter.
Frank was a partner in the engineering sales firm of Foulis & Bennett Electric Limited and Foulis Engineering Sales Limited. He was active in the engineering profession as Chairman, Vice-President Atlantic and a Life Member of the Engineering Institute of Canada; Councillor, Centennial Merit Award and Life Member, Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia; Warden – Camp 7 – Iron Ring Ceremony. Frank's professional contributions to the engineering profession were recognized when he was made a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.
He was also involved and contributed to the community as the Chairman, Board of Directors – Point Pleasant Park Commission; Life Member Maritime Commercial Traveller's Association; Phi Kappa Pi Fraternity and a member of St. Andrew's Lodge and Life Member Scottish Rite.
Frank was a keen yachtsman and active in the local sailing community. He was a Life Member and Past Flag Officer of The Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. He was an enthusiastic cruiser, and in later years really enjoyed visiting around the yard at the RNSYS and taking his family cruising. A cruise with 'Skipper' on the 'Vicki M' was a treat for many visitors to Halifax.
Frank was fortunate to have lived a long, active life enriched by the love and laughter of family and friends.
Cremation and interment have taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew's United Church, Coburg and Robie Streets in Halifax on Tuesday, August 20th, 2002 at 11:30 a.m. Reception following in the church hall. Sincere thanks from all the family to the wonderful staff at St. Vincent's that gave such loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Point Pleasant Park Civic Program c/o Halifax Regional Municipality, P.O. Box 1749, Halifax, NS B3J 3AS for tree replanting in Frank's memory.
