Frank CUNNINGHAM Obituary

FRANK CUNNINGHAM Professor and Political Theorist 1940 - 2022 Frank Cunningham died of cancer at the age of 81 in his Vancouver home, overlooking scenic English Bay and Stanley Park. Frank was the author of seven books and a decorated teacher. Among other posts he served as Chair of the University of Toronto's Philosophy Department and Principal of its Innis College. Born in Evanston, Illinois, he pursued studies at Indiana University and the University of Chicago. He moved to Toronto in 1965 and took out Canadian citizenship in 1973. Frank studied and then taught at the University of Toronto for over 40 years, later taking up a position in Urban Studies at Simon Fraser University. Throughout his life, Frank fought for social justice and democratic socialism. A political activist, he was a founding member of the University of Toronto's Faculty Committee on Vietnam and its Faculty Reform Caucus. Arrested for his opposition in South Africa's apartheid system, he was also active in anti-racist and socialist movements and was instrumental in introducing philosophy courses in Ontario's grades 11 and 12 high school curricula. In Toronto and Vancouver, Frank was active in neighbourhood-level politics. His good and sometimes zany sense of humor tempered his lectures and explains why his students and friends enjoyed his company. He influenced generations of students to see that a more egalitarian Canada was necessary and possible. An open access collection of some of Frank's writings along with a narrative describing the personal and political circumstances of their writing may be accessed at socialiststudies.ca/society-for-socialist-studies-books. Frank enjoyed cooking and his home in Toronto was the epicenter of many lively dinner parties. He loved nothing more than travelling and he combined his passions for travel and teaching by lecturing on social and political thought in Vancouver, Montréal, Kyoto, Amsterdam, Hanoi and Lanzhou (PRC). Unfortunately, COVID-19 and his leukemia curtailed these passions. Frank is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Judge Maryka Omatsu; his sister, Candice; brother, Larry; their children; and his son, Will (by a previous wife). Thanks to Drs. Kathryn Atkinson, Charles Li, Ellen Wiebe and M.A.I.D. Those who wish to make a donation in Frank's memory might do so to the British Columbia Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives or the Canadian Society for Socialist Studies.

Frank was a wonderful friend and a fine teacher whom I encountered in the late 1960s. As a fellow American, then, I appreciated his political passion evoked by the US war in Viet Nam. In philosophy he had a gift for explaining and illustrating his points with verve and humor. Canada gained a fine human being and serious scholar in Frank's immigration.

I was saddened to hear of Frank´s passing...whip smart funny engaging youthful I recall laughing in his philosophy classes, he made critical thinking seem fun and easy. In a word a memorable guy... he will be missed by many. My condolences to the family.

He was a great thinker and teacher. His advice and guidance were vital in my years at the University of Toronto. He supervised my doctoral dissertation in philosophy in the 1980s. A source of inspiration and intellectual leadership, Frank will not be forgotten

Dear Maryka, I am so saddened to hear of Frank's passing. He was an exceptional philosopher and contributed so much to democratic theory and its connections to a more just, socialist society. He was so generous and kind too. He will be sorely missed.

Maryka I am so, so sorry. Frank was a shining light in my life, he opened so much of the world to me, showed me that one can be a revolutionary and laugh, that one can be a frustrated realist and an excited optimist at the same time, and proved in his day-to-day that of all human values deep love is the most important of all. We are all better because of Frank, may his laughter forever remain in our ears and hearts.

This is a major loss, especially for those of us who shared Frank Cunningham's vision of freer and more just world. I am very fortunate to have been taught by Frank, who remained a mentor until the end. R.I.P.

Very sad to hear this news. Frank was a good friend and great teacher in a course we shared for many years. He made a major contribution to the philosophy of urban studies in Canada.

I was a graduate student in the Philosophy department at U. of T. in the late 1970s and did a course with Frank on dialectics. As ever, Frank was always open to spirited debate on all things theoretical and practical. He would, of course, argue that the two are inseparable. Over the years we stayed in touch a Socialist Studies conferences. Frank was always a kind-hearted and sympathetic interlocutor. My condolences to his family.

In the late 70's and early 80's, when a philosopher's perspective was called for, Frank Cunningham was the person we'd go to at CBC Radio, Toronto, for a cogent, illuminating, good-humoured, engaging interview. That was just one way Frank Cunningham contributed depth and wisdom to the public discourse.

I am very sorry for your loss. Frank performed a signal act of kindness for me during the period immediately following my wife's death in Dec. 2001, when he and Roger Riendeau put their heads together and loaned me some office space (in fact a refuge/cave) when I requested it. His life touched many others and I know they will miss him.
