Fred KAUFMAN Obituary

THE HONOURABLE FRED KAUFMAN, C.M. On Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at home, peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, four months shy of his 100th birthday. 'Pupu Fred' lived an extraordinary life and touched the lives of countless people, from his origins in Vienna, to his life in Montreal as a criminal lawyer and judge of the Quebec Court of Appeal, to his commitment to the prevention of wrongful convictions during his 25 years in Toronto. He was a devoted colleague, friend and mentor to many, leaving a legacy of a man of conviction, courage, and consummate humanity. He will be forever remembered and missed by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Donna Soble Kaufman; his children, Leslie and David (Sarah); his grandchildren, Ali, Max and Jacob; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family, for whom his memory will always be a blessing. In his final years, he received outstanding home care from his 'Team ofAngels,' who became part of the Kaufman family and whose devotion and love helped him continue to live with dignity and purpose. Donations can be made to the 'Honouring Fred Kaufman' Fund at Mount Sinai Hospital (https://bit.ly/3GVLjZT), originally established to celebrate his 99th birthday, that will now serve to celebrate an incredible and impactful life through supporting the hospital's ongoing mission to serve an aging population through emergency services, Parkinson's research, geriatric medicine and palliative care.

There are few people in this world who leave a lasting impression, for me Fred and Donna are key examples.

For 12+ years I drove their vehicle from Toronto to Arizona where they spent their winters. During this time I was so fortunate to build a relationship with the Kaufman's.

Fred was a kind, compassionate and vastly intellectual human. His stern judicial exterior matched with his unbelievable witt and humor was a remarkable dicotamy. Most summed up in a proud painting of "Judge with No Pants".

The Kaufman's played a significant part in my life by being mentors, friends and LOL, accomplices in hiding wedding rings.

I will truly miss Fred and my love goes to Donna and the family.

Donna, if there is anything I can do or you just want to chat I'm a phone call away.

Love the Russell's

Dear Donna and Family. I was deeply saddened to learn of Fred´s passing. My deepest condolences to you and the family. Fred was a very special person and a dear friend of myself and my late husband Herb Gray for countless years. I first met Fred when he was my Professor of Criminal Evidence at McGill Law and was proud to be his friend and yours, as he served our country in so many distinguished roles. Sending love to all.

Dear Leslie and family,
Our world is no longer blessed with Fred's physical presence but will always be graced with the memory of a wonderful human being. In a professional world so often dominated by ego, Fred always held himself apart. He was a fabulous and so-well-respected and admired Defence counsel, jurist and advocate for the wrongfully convicted. Humility and compassion were his hallmark qualities.
Over the years, I treasured the rare opportunities I had to spend time with him. Fred was never so busy that he could not take the time to sit with younger counsel and provide sage advice. And that was all only on the professional side of the ledger! Fred's love for and pride in his family was always so evident in our discussions. He thought the world of you all....I suspect that comes as absolutely no surprise to you. Please know how terribly sorry I am for your loss. Even at four months shy of 100, the sense of loss is still there. May Fred's memory be a blessing to the entire family.

I knew Fred Kaufman briefly during the 70s and 80s, both involving Bishop's University and his residence in Knowlton. The respect he commanded from his peers, whether Supreme Court judge or university chancellor, was impressive. But I especially remember a simple, comforting man.

I first met Fred in1967 when I arrived to teach law at McGill in Montreal. He was, at the time, a prominent criminal defence lawyer. He welcomed me with warmth and generosity of spirit. He was a committed legal scholar and major contributor to legal life and practice in Quebec. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew and admired him.

I taught his daughter, Leslie, at Trafalgar School for Years in Montreal. I met her mother and father a few times at parent/teacher interviews. Leslie was a superb student and a fine young woman with intelligence, kindness, empathy, and leadership. Your father was an incredible role model for humanity, justice, and leadership. Leslie - I am so sorry to learn of your father's death. If you wish, contact me. I now live in Victoria BC and would love to connect. Best to you and your family in your sadness.
