Fred SCHAEFFER Obituary

FRED SCHAEFFER Passed away early Saturday morning, August 5, 2023, after a short illness, in his 93rd year. Born in Germany in 1931, he was the only child of Kate and Erich Schaeffer of Toronto. Fearing the worst for the Jews, his parents fled Germany in 1938 for Canada. They settled in Toronto, with Erich becoming the first organist and choir master of the soon-to-be-opened Holy Blossom Temple on Bathurst Street. Fred was a Harbord Collegiate graduate and went on to study civil engineering at the University of Toronto. He then apprenticed in a surveying firm to become an Ontario Land Surveyor. Soon thereafter, he opened a surveying practice in Toronto. This was followed by a successful engineering practice, which he ran for many decades. Both companies, which continue to use the Schaeffer name, are still thriving today. He married Beverly Kaplan from Kirkland Lake in 1955, and became a father of four children, Jonathan and Jennifer, David and Sasha, Daniel and Shoshana, and the late Ruth Ellen 'zl'; a grandfather of ten, Alexandra and Jordan, Natalie and Ben, Erich and Tatiana, Rebecca, Elinoa and Shimmy, Tamara and Yitz, Yona, Chaim Baruch, Joss, and the late Avi 'zl'; eleven great-grandchildren, Akiva, Kayla, Yehuda, Ahuva, Moshe Chaim, Menachem, Yael, Ari, Caleb, Madeline and Maya; and father-in-law of Stephanie. He was a man of his word, a lover of classical music and opera, and he had a profound knowledge of 19th century Canadian art. Together, Fred and Beverly built one of the finest private collections of Canadian art. They collected for over sixty years, while donating many masterpieces and a massive Canadian art library to numerous Canadian art institutions. He was generous to many charities in Canada and Israel, with a special fondness for the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He will be sadly missed by all his family members and many friends. At Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue West (three lights west of Dufferin), for service on Monday, August 7th at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow in the Beth Tikvah Synagogue section of Pardes Shalom Cemetery. Shiva at 18 Seinecliffe Road, Thornhill. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you give a donation to the Canadian Friends Of The Hebrew University: cfhu.org, 1-888-432-7398.

To Beverly and the entire Schaeffer family,
Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences on Fred's passing. We are honoured to have known him and have many fond memories of him. He was a remarkable man in so many ways - as a father, a husband, a friend and a business leader. We have witnessed his kind spirit, friendly and understanding nature, both on a personal and professional level. We hope that you will find comfort and strength in the fond memories you have of such a wonderful human being.

Dear Beverly and family. The Gottliebs are mourning the loss of a remarkable man. Fred was the late David Gottlieb´s beloved partner and best friend. That two such different men should have bonded as they did must have filled both their souls. As an only child, Fred found an Israeli brother. As the sole surviving brother in a family of four boys, David´s relationship with Fred was extraordinary. Both passed away exactly six months of each other. If there is a heaven, they are sitting together laughing about about land development secrets, David teasing Fred about the Wagner symphony moment, and both betting which subdivision´s storm sewers may not last the test of time. May Fred´s memory be for a blessing. He touched so many lives.

To Beverly and her Family,
My sincere condolences to you on the passing of Fred. I am honoured to have worked for Fred. More importantly, I wish to convey the respect and friendship my father had with Fred while being his partner in the land surveying firm. He always spoke highly of Fred. They had a perfect business "marriage" in that they had different skills that complimented each other to conduct a successful business. He would have undoubtedly shown his respect at this moment as Fred did at the passing of my father over 20 years ago.
My mother is now 94 years old with Alzheimer's disease. She is now living in a long-term care facility. I told her of Fred's passing and she asked me to pass on her condolences and to make a donation.

Yours truly,
Harold Reinthaler

My memories of Fred are of him proudly showing me round the unparalleled collection of Canadian art that he and Beverly put together. Their home was a treasure house and the two of them the most generous, kindest hosts you could imagine. Fred was so proud of it and endlessly knowledgeable. A kind, kind man. I´ll miss him.
