I remember Mr. Ketchen as a very inspiring lay assistant at St, John’s Dixie Anglican Church in Mississauga in the 1970s and early 1980s before I moved away and got married. His booming baritone voice left a lifelong impression and in many ways inspired me to move my faith forward as a lay assistant at my present church. My sincerest condolences to his family.

My deepest sympathies to the Family. As a financial columnist it often fell to me to get a snappy quote that came with insight and would be easily understood by readers. On such occasions, I invariably turned to Fred. No matter what time of day and no matter how busy he was, Fred would always return my calls.
Over time, we struck up a friendship and our conversation would gravitate into family life and our interests away from the office.
Fred was a remarkable person. Kind and generous with his time and his thoughts. He was a gentleman and an extremely kind soul. Deeply respected by everyone who met him.
Rest in Peace, Fred. You will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing you. A good man.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to you Sherilyn and your family at this difficult time.
Your dad was a special man. First time I met your dad I was on training downtown and our group had a tour on your dads floor. He made such a great impression on our group. From that day on I consider your dad a great friend. He was so gracious and an extraordinary man. Then when our Mississauga office started to do charity work in our community your dad was always our Special guest and also when we had client event and he was our special guest speaker we always had a full house. Everyone loved to hear your dad speak.
Your dad will be missed.
May your dad Rest In Peace

First and foremost I would like to offer my deepest sympathy and condolences to the family, in particular, Sherilyn.
I joined Shearson Hayden Stone in the fall of 1980 in the Montreal Capitol Center office, which was soon taken over by McLeod Young Weir. Throughout the 16 years in that branch, I talked with Fred frequently over the phone at the trading desk and also met in person at several corporate events. I always admired his gentlemanly composure, wit, and calmness. When I moved to the Regional Office in 1996 Fred was always our top speaker at all our regional conferences, meetings, etc. (I remember his three-piece suits very well).
Such an amazing man in so many ways. No doubt he will be sorely missed by not only his family but also colleagues and friends.
Biggest hugs Sherilyn,
Lynn (Hoffmann)

Fred transcended banking and trading to become both a Toronto and a Canadian icon. He never forgot a face or a name, and he lived life with the credo "a kind word never broke anyone's mouth". Everyone who ever met Fred thought they just made a new friend because they did. Fred was everyone's friend. When I was working for Scotia, Fred helped me out on a project so I gave him a bottle of wine to say thanks and I mentioned that my good friend named Eden use to work with him on the trading desk, but I wasn't sure if he'd remember him. That brought a big smile to Fred's face and he replied "Hey, you just don't forget a guy like Eden".

My deepest condolences to the entire family. Fred is and always will be a Legend at ScotiaMcLeod. He was kind to everyone and took the time to mentor and teach us all at some point or another. Our client's loved when he would come to Ottawa to speak. He left very big shoes to fill and I am not sure, with all he did for us and the industry, those shoes will ever truly fit anyone else. Rest in Peace Fred . . .

When I joined MYW Frank Munro was the head of equity trading supported by Fred and Marj . A high pressure environment in which Fred operated with unfailing modesty ,courtesy ,humour , and very high energy . Frank was a snappy dresser and influenced Fred’s more sober 3 piece style . Fred organised the firms annual Christmas party and was the entertainment . He was always full of surprises like marrying Marj and becoming TSE chairman . He was universally liked .

I was hired off the post at the Toronto Stock Exchange by Laurie Williams, head trader for McLeod, Young & Weir in the mid '60's as a phone clerk on the trading floor. Fred was on the trading desk along with Marj, his wife & Frank Monroe who was the boss. Fred & Marj would call in the orders down to the floor; not once do i recall Fred or Marj swearing into the phone with the buys/sells ;of course Frank Monroe could talk a blue streak. The market openings were always the busiest, but Fred was always the guy in charge; we would go back to the office on the close, have some tea and answer any questions from the always busy trading days. McLeod Young & Weir was a class act & Fred Ketchen was responsible in part for that image.

I started my career in the investment business at McLeod Young Weir in the spring of 1973. In those days you were in training for a year, it was a great education, you would be on delivery, that is taking physical paper, stocks and bonds that were in negotiable form, from the banks to the investment/brokerage companies, insurance companies and so on. One day I delivered a million dollar bond from Bay and King, to Yonge and Eglinton by subway, to the Imperial Oil offices, delivered the bond, got the cheque in exchange and took it back to MYW. For a 22 year old from Nova Scotia, that was something I will never forget. You did research work for the research department, and back up information work for the underwriting department, sat in on the bond desk, money market desk (all you did on the bond desk and money market desk was listen and get them a coffee when they asked), and yes on the stock desk with Fred Ketchen. Fred's sat at a large U shaped wooden desk where 3 to 5 people could sit, in the center of the desk was the ticker tape, it went on a track around a wooden support, and you would hear Fred in his baritone voice "Bank of Nova Scotia ups their dividend, stocks up 50 cents", someone would ask how much, Fred would answer "a penny a quarter". The ticker tapes were saved for ticker tape parades. Back then, McLeod, Young, Weir was located in the old Bank of Montreal building, it even had elevators operated by ladies who welcomed you in the morning and worked the elevator so it would deliver you to your floor. The lady elevator operators always greeted the notables by name, good morning Mr. MacDonald, good morning Mr. Dinnick, not sure if Fred got that treatment then, that was 1973, it was probably, good morning Fred. Well, a presence he had, I remember one day, the chairman of the company came to the trading desk and asked what Roman was trading at, it was a big mining company, and with Fred's answer, he said buy me 5000 shares. Now that made an impression on a young Maritimer ! Fred treated everyone well, always remembered me through my 40 years with the company, it was a real pleasure to know him. I feel very fortunate to have known Fred Ketchen.
My sincere sympathy and good wishes to all his family and friends.

To Fred’s family: Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss of an amazing man. I worked with Fred at Scotia Capital for many years and he was truly a force. He always made time for me. One day, on the trading desk, I asked him a huge favour. I said “Fred, my Grandmother, Mabel, turned 90 today. She listens to you all the time and I think she has a secret crush on you. Would you say hello to her and wish her a happy birthday? “.
“ Of course”, he said, “Put her on!” And so he made my Grandmother’s birthday. A complete stranger. She was speechless. Fred was one of a kind.
Sincerely,
Donna Toth.

Fred was an amazing gentleman and a great human being. I had the opportunity to work with him as I was in finance running the Equity P&L, then moved to the Floor while in Equity Research. He treated everyone as if we were the Chair of the Board regardless of title, gender or race. He took great pride of is inventory account and loved to hear us call him "007"! Thanks Freddy, you were an example to many. My sincere condolences to the family.

Fred, along with Hazel McCallion, were the first two Patrons of The Riverwood Conservancy. He predates the organization on the property and knew the property owner of the time so had a long history with Riverwood. He was always a source of sound recommendations and was instrumental with our long term and strong support from Scotia McLeod and Scotia Bank! Fred was the embodiment of what a Gentleman should be.

Fred was a lovely man with a great sense of humour. He was endlessly patient with the many rookies that were hired during McLeod's growth phase back in the early 1980s, while being the front man for the firm on TV and in other media. He was always the consummate professional who always had something interesting to say. Farewell Fred. Thanks.
