FREDERICK WONG (March 6, 1942 - June 14, 2008) With sadness and sorrow, we announce that Frederick Wong passed away peacefully with family members at his side on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the Ottawa General Hospital from cancer.
Fred is survived by his loving family: his mother Elaine of Vancouver (and predeceased by his father Lang), by brother Alfred and his wife Christine of Vancouver, by brother Edwin, his wife Victoria and their son Kevin of Vancouver, by brother Stanley of Dublin, Ireland, by brother Ernest, his wife Catherine and their children Jeffrey, Douglas and Grace of Sarnia and by sister Helen, her husband Michael and their son Joshua of Vancouver and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins in Canada and elsewhere.
In his brief and brave struggle with his illness, Fred was touched by the messages of love, affection, support and hope from his large and diverse circles of friends. The family is very grateful for the invaluable advice provided by cousins Dr Herbert Wong and Dr Henry Wong of Vancouver.
Fred was a charter student and received a B.A. in Economics from Simon Fraser University where he also did graduate studies. Upon graduation he joined the federal public service in Ottawa as a professional economist where he worked for over 35 years principally at Statistics Canada and then recently at Natural Resources Canada until his retirement in 2006.
For 14 consecutive years, Fred devoted enormous energy and time to host an annual summer barbeque in support of The Ottawa Food Bank. The event is recognized as one of the major individual initiatives to support a community charity. The Ottawa Tennis & Lawn Bowling Club of which Fred was a tennis member for over 25 years was at the centre of his rich social life.
On Friday, June 20th at 7:00 pm a Memorial Service will be held at the Chapel of McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home & Chapel at 1411 Hunt Club Road (at Albion Road), Ottawa, Ontario. Visitations at the Funeral Home will be held Thursday, June 19th from 7 to 9 pm and Friday, June 20th from 6 to 7 pm.
On Tuesday, June 24th at 2 pm, a Funeral Service will be held at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, 949 - 49th Avenue West (at Oak Street), Vancouver, British Columbia.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted for the Fred Wong Memorial Emergency Fund at The Ottawa Food Bank, 1317B Michael Street, Ottawa, ON, K1B 3M9. Other projects to celebrate Fred's life and legacy are being planned.
