Frederick Zemans Obituary

On Sunday, August 10th, in his 88th year, surrounded by his wife and children, Fred passed peacefully after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Born and raised in Calgary, son of Mozah and Newton, Fred attended the University of Toronto and quickly made the city his home when he met Joyce in 1956. Beloved husband of Joyce for 65 years, they were best friends throughout. Dear father of Debbie, David, and Catherine, and Marcia and Adam; beloved Grandpa Fred to Erin and Mark, Eden, and David, Madeleine, Oliver, Jacob, and Hannah; and brother to Gail and her husband, Ken. Fred was loved by all who had the privilege to know him. Fred was the founding director of Parkdale Community Legal Services and dedicated his life to making legal services accessible to all, in Canada and around the world. A pioneer in both clinical legal education and Alternative Dispute Resolution, he was a professor to generations of law students at Osgoode Hall Law School, where he taught for over 40 years. An active member of the community, Fred supported many organizations, including serving as a president of Holy Blossom Temple and founding president of Leo Baeck Day School. Fred especially loved spending time with family and friends in Toronto and at Stony Lake. He loved nothing more than being part of his grandchildren and children's many celebrations and accomplishments. He never missed an opportunity to dance, cry with joy, or make a lengthy speech. The family is grateful for the loving care provided by caregivers JayR, Edith, and Erly and Dr. Carol Silverstein for her love and support. Funeral service will be held at Holy Blossom Temple, 1950 Bathurst Street, Toronto, Tuesday, August 12th, at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Holy Blossom Memorial Park, 66 Brimley Road, Scarborough. We were deeply saddened to hear of Fred´s passing and grateful
To Fred for his friendship and mentoring during the Parkdale
years. At 80 years old having spent over 50 of them in the law I
look back and recall with gratitude a great inciteful and sensitive
Teacher who opened a door of learning on society unique and enduring which was inspiring and truly shaped the years to come
for so many students. The lesson he taught amongst so many
became a guiding principle of living - that there is some good in
Everyone- everyone- you just have to identify. It and help it grow
with all the tools you have.Furthermore you may not always get
to where you wanted to be but your journey with your client and
friend will endure in many profound ways. sounds simple but it
is a very valuable lesson which Fred and Dick embraced and lives
On in the lives of so many of us who were so privileged to have the
chance to be at Parkdale. We know the great family , friends and
Professional friends will be a great support and Fred´s spirit and
influence in the lives of so many recognized . Sincerely Bill Prueter

Fred taught me in my LLM (ADR) program. When I approached him to whine about a B+ grade on my research paper, he invited me to consider his feedback, revise the paper, and resubmit it. I did so and he changed my grade. Later, when I taught law students, I adopted his approach, and those law students learned more than they would have, had I not had Fred as my teacher. Then, when I applied for a subsequent graduate program, he wrote a reference and couriered it to the university. His generosity motivated me to contribute to the Fred Zemans bursary at Osgoode. He was a model law teacher and a mensch. John Done, Kingston

My arrival at Osgoode Hall Law School would not have been the same without Fred. And my 12 years of happiness there were in large part a tribute to him and Joyce. I join Fred´s family in celebrating the life of a wonderful, caring man.

Fred was a pioneer of clinical legal education and poverty law. Even more importantly he was a wise, kind and dedicated friend and mentor. We've learned to miss him over these last years, but this doesn't make his passing any easier to bear.
