Frederick Zemans

On Sunday, August 10th, in his 88th year, surrounded by his wife and children, Fred passed peacefully after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Born and raised in Calgary, son of Mozah and Newton, Fred attended the University of Toronto and quickly made the city his home when he met Joyce in 1956. Beloved husband of Joyce for 65 years, they were best friends throughout. Dear father of Debbie, David, and Catherine, and Marcia and Adam; beloved Grandpa Fred to Erin and Mark, Eden, and David, Madeleine, Oliver, Jacob, and Hannah; and brother to Gail and her husband, Ken. Fred was loved by all who had the privilege to know him. Fred was the founding director of Parkdale Community Legal Services and dedicated his life to making legal services accessible to all, in Canada and around the world. A pioneer in both clinical legal education and Alternative Dispute Resolution, he was a professor to generations of law students at Osgoode Hall Law School, where he taught for over 40 years. An active member of the community, Fred supported many organizations, including serving as a president of Holy Blossom Temple and founding president of Leo Baeck Day School. Fred especially loved spending time with family and friends in Toronto and at Stony Lake. He loved nothing more than being part of his grandchildren and children's many celebrations and accomplishments. He never missed an opportunity to dance, cry with joy, or make a lengthy speech. The family is grateful for the loving care provided by caregivers JayR, Edith, and Erly and Dr. Carol Silverstein for her love and support. Funeral service will be held at Holy Blossom Temple, 1950 Bathurst Street, Toronto, Tuesday, August 12th, at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Holy Blossom Memorial Park, 66 Brimley Road, Scarborough.
