Gail BROWN Obituary
GAIL BROWN (née Detgen) At Sunnybrook Hospital on January 1, 2022, of heart failure. Gail was 86, and passed peacefully with family at her bedside. She is survived by her children, Bradley Bower Brown (Donna), Brenda Berkeley Katz (Avi), Brian Blair Brown (Allison); grandchildren, Greta Brown, Noam Katz, and Clara and Fiona Brown; and her sister, Holly Gordon. Gail met her husband, Craig, while studying at the University of Rochester. She was a chemist with Eastman Kodak, working on early instant film, before moving with Craig to Canada, first to Calgary then to Toronto. She enjoyed a 56-year marriage with Craig, who predeceased her in 2016. Gail loved her extensive garden and being surrounded by nature at the family cottage. She loved astronomy; at the cottage she could track the moons of Jupiter through one of her two telescopes. Gail was also creative and crafty; she sewed, making dresses for grandchildren, and pursued a wide range of arts and crafts projects. She shared these interests with her children and grandchildren. Actively involved in her community, Gail impacted the lives of many through Eglington St. Georges Church, book clubs, and close friends. The family wishes especially to thank the many amazing doctors and staff at Sunnybrook who cared for both Craig and Gail for many decades, and the many staff in ICU, ward, and palliative care who showed such compassion and care for Gail and her family. A memorial service will be held in early summer. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Craig Brown Travelling Fellowship for History Graduate Students Fund would be appreciated (donations may be made through the University of Toronto Donations at 416-978-0811).
