Gareth RHYDDERCH Obituary

RHYDDERCH, Dr. Gareth Mervyn
MB., B.S., FRCPC March 12, 1944 - May 5, 2014
Gareth went gently into that good night at home, with his beloved wife Maggie, his daughter, Sian and his son, James by his side. Gareth was a great Dad to his loving children and their spouses, Sian and Will Bridge, James and Piper Rhydderch and David and Jena Rhydderch. He was a warm and welcoming Step-Dad to Maggie's children, Michael and Stephanie Whaley, Jennifer and William Bremner, and Kevin Whaley. He was the adored Grandpa to Kate and Lucy Bridge, and Charley Rhydderch, and Taid to Ava, Ella, and Macie Whaley. Gareth was a proud Welshman, the youngest son of Dr. Mervyn and Nina Rhydderch. He was the much loved brother and brother-in-law of Gerry and Margaret Rhydderch, and David and Mavis Rhydderch. He will be missed by his in-laws, Mary Ann and Paul Ciprietti, Antoinette and Mike McDermott, Anthony and Maureen Corrado, Nick and Marife Corrado, and Elena and Michael Corrado, and by his many nieces, nephews and good friends. Gareth received his Medical Degree from Charing Cross Hospital, London, England, in 1968. He stayed on working in the United Kingdom. as a House Physician and Surgeon until 1970, at which time he spent a most memorable year as a Medical Officer with the Zambia Flying Doctor Service. On his return to England, he became a Registrar in Internal Medicine, and joyfully welcomed the birth of two of his children, Sian and James. In 1974, he packed up his young family and moved to Canada, working as a General Practitioner in Fort Nelson, British Columbia for five happy years. Often acting as a G.P. Anaesthetist, he found his true calling. He joined the Anaesthesia Programme at McMaster University in 1979. It was during his residency that his youngest son, David was born. On passing his exams, he stayed on at Hamilton Health Sciences for the next 30 years, as a staff Anaesthesiologist and Associate Clinical Professor. For the last six years of his illustrious career, Gareth did Chronic Pain Management full time. His knowledge, warmth, kindness and compassionate nature brought comfort and pain relief to hundreds of his grateful patients. A colleague once said of Gareth, 'He is a Gentleman in the true sense of the word, a gentleman and a gentle man.' The family wishes to thank Dr. John Turnbull, Jane Allan, and Maureen Hills at The ALS Clinic at McMaster, Dr. Tony Kerrigan, Kerry Ann, and Mary from the Good Shepherd Palliative Team, The CCAC, and our supportive, helpful neighbours and friends. Visitation at DODSWORTH & BROWN FUNERAL HOME 'ANCASTER CHAPEL' 378 Wilson Street East (905) 648-3852, on Monday, May 12, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. John's Anglican Church, 272 Wilson Street East, Ancaster on Tuesday, May 13 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Ancaster. In lieu of flowers, donations to the ALS Clinic and Research Team at McMaster, Good Shepherd or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
