GARY CWITCO

GARY CWITCO Obituary

November 19, 1948 - December 4, 2025 Purpose and dignity defined Gary from his youth to his death last Thursday. He dedicated his working life to helping working people achieve justice and what was owed them. And he did the same in his active community life. He wrote and spoke clearly because he thought so clearly and always deeply, from broad reading that came out of his curiosity, his concern for people and his love of history and politics. Just speaking with him was a pleasure; he listened so well and when he spoke about something it was always reasoned, based on fact and understanding of others' opinions. This was what made him so respected by his union, management opponents and arbitrators and led to his roles in the Communication Workers of Canada, in the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada and in its Humanity Fund and ultimately to the panel of the Rapid Response Labour Mechanism for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. And made him so loved by his family and all his wide circle of friends on three continents. A skilled photographer, a sensational chef, a powerful cyclist. And an-oh-so loved and loving partner to Fern who knows what a gift she had and whose infinite grief now declares what wonderful lives they had together. Gary generously supported the causes he believed in, among them are the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and Maquila Solidarity Network

Fern,
Meeting you and Gary was such an unexpected gift. I always felt we were family, and I was lucky to meet you both later in life. I´ll always remember the good times we shared. I´m really sorry, Fern. Thinking of you with much love. Guillermo

Hi Fern - we are so sad to hear of Gary's passing.
He and I drifted apart over the last decades, but I have many great memories of our time together. Gary and I were great friends growing up in Westdale and ended up going to Western and lived together after residence. Subsequently, Gary went to University of Wisconsin-Madison (I think) pursuing his political science passion and I went off to UofT. It was great to be a part of yours and Gary's wedding as the best man. In reading the obituary, it appears that Gary pursued his life's philosophy through his professional career. That's a real accomplishment. Although we had the odd philosophical disagreement over the years, I still consider him a to be great friend.
You and Gary are in our thoughts
