GARY CWITCO Obituary

November 19, 1948 - December 4, 2025 Purpose and dignity defined Gary from his youth to his death last Thursday. He dedicated his working life to helping working people achieve justice and what was owed them. And he did the same in his active community life. He wrote and spoke clearly because he thought so clearly and always deeply, from broad reading that came out of his curiosity, his concern for people and his love of history and politics. Just speaking with him was a pleasure; he listened so well and when he spoke about something it was always reasoned, based on fact and understanding of others' opinions. This was what made him so respected by his union, management opponents and arbitrators and led to his roles in the Communication Workers of Canada, in the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada and in its Humanity Fund and ultimately to the panel of the Rapid Response Labour Mechanism for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. And made him so loved by his family and all his wide circle of friends on three continents. A skilled photographer, a sensational chef, a powerful cyclist. And an-oh-so loved and loving partner to Fern who knows what a gift she had and whose infinite grief now declares what wonderful lives they had together. Gary generously supported the causes he believed in, among them are the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and Maquila Solidarity Network

I´m so glad I got to know Gary when I was an up and coming union leader at SONG during the 90s - learned so much from him and the joys of international solidarity and negotiating a good deal for the membership. Lay down tools brother - youve earned your rest

Deepest condolences to Gary's family members during this difficult time.

Gary was one was very best minds as a union rep, especially in the health and safety field where he exceptional in every regard.

Working people, and the broader community, are so much safer in their workplaces because of his devotion to the issue over the years.

Well done brother.

I will forever hold Gary in the highest of esteem. He was a kind and thoughtful colleague, mentor and friend, sharing generously of his wide knowledge and vast experience. Gary was the epitome of urbane and sophisticated, well-read, well-travelled and well-respected, yet he was humble and empathetic and devoted his life to giving a hand up to anyone who needed it

Gary, your efforts made life better for workers both at home and abroad. Rest well, my friend. I am glad to have known you.

Gary was like a second father to me, we kept in touch and had visited often at the condo. I appreciated the things he did for me and my children. I have a fond memory of Gary and I spending quality time with his mother when she lived in Westdale. Gary may have been sturn at times and in my eyes he always had a sense of authority and a person I looked up too. He was a well educated man who took the time to answer my questions when I asked. Overall Gary would have made an exceptional father and I was so privileged to have that kind of bond with him. He was a wonderful man who i will forever hold dear to my heart.

I met Gary when I first took my union activism beyond my workplace to Labour Council. Gary was a leader I looked up to, an activist who stood by his principles and a wonderful presence in our neighbourhood. We will miss him.

When Gary was born I was six years old. I remember my father telling me that I had a baby brother and I asked my father whether we could give him back and get a dog instead. But I´m so glad that he didn´t listen to me. Gary was the best brother I could have wished for.

Hi Fern - we are so sad to hear of Gary's passing.
He and I drifted apart over the last decades, but I have many great memories of our time together. Gary and I were great friends growing up in Westdale and ended up going to Western and lived together after residence. Subsequently, Gary went to University of Wisconsin-Madison (I think) pursuing his political science passion and I went off to UofT. It was great to be a part of yours and Gary's wedding as the best man. In reading the obituary, it appears that Gary pursued his life's philosophy through his professional career. That's a real accomplishment. Although we had the odd philosophical disagreement over the years, I still consider him a to be great friend.
You and Gary are in our thoughts
Doug and Trish (Gordon)
