GARY KAIN Obituary
Gary Kain was born in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1946, and passed away in Oakville, Ontario, on August 4, 2025. He attended McMaster University where he met the love of his life, Betty (née McKinnell), to whom he was married for 55 years. He and Betty had three wonderful children: Brandon, a son; Aimee, a daughter; and Amina, a daughter-in-law. They were also gifted with two gorgeous granddaughters: Ava and Layla. All were deeply loved. Gary obtained a B.A. and an MBA from McMaster University. In addition, he obtained a C.A., C.P.A. and C.B.V. designation. In 1988, he conceived of and founded Regional Cablesystems Inc., a cable television, high speed internet and telecom entity with operations throughout Canada and the Bahamas. Regional was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and included in the T.S.E. 300 index. When sold in 2004 for gross proceeds of $406M, the company employed 550 individuals, largely in rural and remote areas of Canada. In addition to being Chairman and C.E.O. of Regional, he was a member of the following Boards: McMaster University, Norsat International Inc., Oakville Hydro, Be Aliv Ltd., Organic Resource Management Inc., The Community Foundation of Oakville, Cable Bahamas (Chairman), Sheridan College (Chairman), The Orlando Telephone Company (Chairman) and Summit Broadband (Chairman). He was inducted into the McMaster University Alumni Gallery in 2007, and, in 2011, he became the eleventh recipient of the Wayne Fox Alumni of Distinction Award from the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University. Articles detailing his career may be found in the Globe and Mail (March 9, 1991) and Canadian Business (September 4, 2000). Some of Gary's favourite memories included growing up in Westdale and playing hockey with his friends, as well as spending time with his parents (Lyle and Elizabeth), brothers (Robert, Alan and Brian) and sister (Patricia) at Balm Beach. He was well travelled, and particularly enjoyed his trips to Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Hawaii, and South America with his wife Betty. He loved entrepreneurship, mentoring, golf, and reading; but most of all, his family. A celebration of life service for Gary will be held at The Oakville Golf Club.
