Gary LUKASSEN Obituary

GARY JOHN LUKASSEN March 1, 1944 - April 16, 2023 Quietly on Sunday April 16, 2023 Gary passed away after a long battle with cancer. Gary is survived by his wife, Maureen; his sisters, Maria Miller (Richard), Johanna Lukassen; and brother, John Lukassen (Nancy); and five nieces and nephews. The Lukassen family came to Canada in 1952 from the Netherlands in search of a better life and settled on a farm near Huntingdon, Quebec. Gary, the oldest, and his siblings all attended a one room elementary grade school and was a passionate hockey and baseball player. A proud Chartered Accountant, Gary first worked with PWC in Montreal while going to night school to earn his degree. He held various positions in banks in the Bahamas and Canada before joining Hudson Bay Company in 1975. He quickly rose through various HBC divisions and became Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of HBC in 1989. He retired in 2001. In retirement Gary kept busy, as a Director of numerous Companies, including The North West Company, Stelco Inc., Abitibi and Factory Mutual Insurance Company. He loved getting in his Cadillac and driving with Maureen to Florida on their annual winter trip or drives to Montreal to visit family at Christmas time. Gary, a Weston G&CC member, was an avid and competitive golfer who only rarely practiced. He loved his sports especially his beloved Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Giants. He was a kind, generous, and considerate individual, and very private and proud, who loved life and his draught beer. There are many who will miss him. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Weston Golf and Country Club on Saturday, June 3rd from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. for family and friends. Gary would welcome your attendance.

I am so sorry that I have only now heard of Gary´s passing. I worked with Gary at HBC in the 80´s. He was a kind and gentle man who supported and encouraged me as a very young executive. He was a dedicated husband and loved his family very much. I truly wish I had been able to attend his celebration of life. I send my deepest sympathies to all of Gary´s families.

Loss of a great friend. No matter how challenging life was he faced it with a positive attitude and humility. A great lesson for me. RIP

My condolences to the Lukassen family.
As a member of the Dutch community in Huntingdon, I have fond memories of family visits and also of Gary as a fine and intelligent high school student destined to become a very accomplished adult.
May his spirit continue to enrich all who knew him.
