Gary MACDONALD Obituary

GARY ANDREW MACDONALD 1951 - 2021 A life well lived. A friend to all. Gary Andrew MacDonald: Gary, Freckles, Garney, Gar, GarAndy, Woody, Gary Mac, G-Mac, G, Bro, Dad, Daddio, Grandpa. After a long battle with a brain disease, Gary passed away peacefully on October 14, 2021 with family by his side. Remembered lovingly by his wife Marg, children Christopher (Karen) and Joanna, grandchildren Bennett, Pierce, and Sloane, stepson Andy Clarke (Bea), brothers Allan (Arlene), John (Eleanor), Scott (Tracey), Marg's Poplar Family, and the many (many) MacDonald cousins and relatives all over North America. Gary was the second of four boys, born in Truro, Nova Scotia to Joe and Anne MacDonald, each from families of 16 and 12 kids respectively. Gary grew up in Brantford, Ontario where he first learned the bapgipes at the age of 10 and started playing sports. At Brantford Collegiate Institute, Gary excelled at football and track and field. Gary attended the Ivey School of business at The University of Western Ontario from 1970-1974, where he also played on the varsity football team and won a national championship with the UWO rugby team. Gary moved to Winnipeg in 1976 to join the family business and spent the next four decades investing his passion in the employees, partners, and customers; helping grow MacDon into a global leader of harvesting equipment. His office door always open, Gary Mac lived what he believed, business isn't about business; it's about people. Following in the footsteps of his father, Joe, Gary enjoyed his involvement with ag industry associations such as: CFIEI, EMI, AEM, and Farm Foundation. Gary and Joan lovingly raised their family in Winnipeg. Gary was a devoted Dad to Christopher and Joanna, tying hockey skates, watching Highland dance competitions, tuning bagpipes, and carpooling across the city. Suit up - show up, work hard - play hard, make time for family and others. Dad didn't tell us how to live, he lived and let us watch him do it. During his Winnipeg years, Gary was a strong community supporter. A proud member of the Winnipeg Police Pipe Band for over 40 years, he also enjoyed teaching kids on Saturday mornings with the Lord Selkirk Boy Scout Pipe Band. Not deterred by the absence of an invitation, he rarely missed an opportunity to strike up the pipes; the annual ALS walk, Grey Cups, weddings, parties, business conferences, and even playing on stage with Sir Paul McCartney. A provincial rugby champion with the Saracens RFC, Woody helped build Maple Grove Rugby Park and enjoyed the camaraderie of SNAFU weekends and coaching high school rugby. In 1999, he was a chair with the Pan Am Games. In everything he did, Gary brought a fun-loving attitude and developed meaningful relationships with those around him. Later in life, Garney reconnected with Marg and enjoyed winters in Arizona (hiking up Daisy Mountain), summers in Collingwood (hiking up Blue Mountain), and gatherings with family and friends around the barbecue and the hot tub (trunks optional). The intensity and compassion with which Gary lived his life carried through his final years; determined to walk and laugh every day. His final act of giving to others, he has donated his brain to the study of cerebral amyloid angiopathy at Sunnybrook Hospital. The immediate family wish to express their sincere thanks for the wonderful care and compassion Gary received from Dr. Black and Dr. Gallagher at Sunnybrook Hospital and G's dream team: Jay, Ziena, Katelyn, and Erik. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gary's memory to the Sunnybrook Foundation supporting the Dr. Sandra Black Centre for Brain Resilience and Recovery, 2075 Bayview Avenue, KGW-01, Toronto, ON, M4N 3M5. Celebrations of life will be held at the Old Mill, Toronto, ON, Saturday, October 30 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. EDT and at the Victoria Inn, Winnipeg, MB, Saturday, November 6 from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. CDT with a short program to commence at 1:30 p.m. CDT including live streaming available: http://youtu.be/qCvsXx_lTVk. I lived in Winnipeg for a little over a year and had the pleasure of playing rugby with Gary with the Saracens as well as and with Manitoba at the Western Canadian Championships in 1980. Gary was a great rugby player, but an even better person. My sincere condolences!

For some reason, I was checking the internet to see where some people were that I grew up with and came across Gary's obituary. My deepest condolences to the family for this loss. I attended public and high school with Gary (one year behind) and have very fond memories of him playing the pipes in his back yard. (I live across the street). He was certainly loved by all who knew him growing up.

Gary was quite simply one of the finest persons whom I have had the pleasure of meeting through a common friend Donna Tesarowski. Gary and Donna developed an incredibly special friendship as he helped Donna to live her life to the very fullest during her most challenging times. Gary’s thoughtfulness and generosity was extended to everyone that he met. As a true gentleman he never asked for or expected anything in return. On the other side of the coin no one loved a party or enjoyed good times with his family and friends more than Gary. We were all so saddened to hear of his passing and I’m sure that a part of our hearts have gone with him. Slainte Mhath to Gary.

Loved that guy. Gary was a very hard worker. I needed to leave a message for him one day so I decided to call his office and leave him a voicemail.
It was Saturday night at 11 pm.
Gary answered. “ Gary” I said. “ What are you doing at the office on Saturday night at 11 pm?” The answer was that he was in Chicago and returned from a meeting at 7 pm. Having work to complete he decided to go to the office while it was quiet. We had a lovely chat, I delivered my message and Gary returned to his work.
Love that man. Always will. Circle of life complete.

Gary’s warm, personable nature seems to have percolated down to all personal at MacDon, it didn’t matter who from MacDon I had to work with the same pleasant, accommodating, fun nature seem to be instilled in even the newest team member.
Rarely does a person with such a quiet demeanour have that sort of effect on such a large organization.
Thank you and farewell my friend.

Gary was a member at Park West Fitness in Winnipeg - a gym I had worked at. He was always so friendly, with a real sense of humour. He would pass by me as I worked at the front desk, always stopping to make small-talk. One day, Gary overheard that I was locked out of my frozen car, without a wallet, requiring Lock-De-Icer from the gas station down the street in order to get inside. Gary immediately handed me a $20 bill. I swiftly shot back that this was WAY MORE money than I needed ($2 purchase). Gary insisted that I kept the change, rationalizing this generous deed by saying that "the members of the gym appreciate all the hard work you do for us!" Gary didn't give me $20 because he HAD the money. Gary gave me $20 because he was caring, generous, and wanted to give thanks. I'll never forget Gary - as a businessman, as a community leader, and as a gym rat. This kind-deed story will forever stick with me. He really DID make me feel good! He will always be remembered. Much love, Gary! - Luc Bohunicky

My condolences to Gary's family. I met Gary at U.W.O when he was already on a career path; in the biz school, playing the pipes and of course he was an accomplished athlete. I was a teammate with Gary on the "72 rugby team. We lost touch with each other following graduation but the memories remained. Gary played a significant role on the team and his easy going friendly demeanor was ever present. The evening practices and weekend games left an impression on us all and for me Gary will always be remembered in his youth, so filled with spirit and vitality as torn down the field. When I read of Gary's passing in the Globe and Mail it shot my memory back to our time on the rugby pitch. lt was a "Chariots of Fire" moment where memories from the past are vividly recalled. They were great memories and I'm sure Gary enjoyed every moment.
Rest in peace Gary.

I was sad to hear about Gary. I thought he was self motivated and respectful of others. I met him when he was in the Brantford pipe band; my Dad was piping with the band. I was piping also but with a different group in Hamilton.Years later, I met him in Banff where I was climbing and he was just thrilled to be in the mountains. He had a pleasant attitude and wanted to help people when opportunity arose. My Dad, a commerce graduate, who retired and returned to MB, had some good times with Gary and was very pleased to see the success he and his family had achieved with MacDon. My condolences to all who were fortunate to have met Gary.

Always enjoyed seeing Gary at the shows and industry meetings. A kind and generous man, who on more than one occasion made time for me during a drop-in meeting at the plant in Winnipeg. One of the good guys who'll be missed. Condolences to the MacDonald and MacDon family.
