Geoffrey MURRAY Obituary

MURRAY, Geoffrey Stuart C.M., B.A., B.C.L.
Born in St. Lambert, PQ, August 29, 1918, died peacefully in Ottawa, July 31, 2006 in his 88th year. Loved and deeply missed by his daughter Anne- Marie Elisabeth, his son John Geoffrey, brother John Murray (Howick, PQ) and sister Lorna Miller (Ottawa). Predeceased by his wife Suzanne (Cadieux), brothers Kenneth and Donald and parents John Reginald Cuthbert and Grace Isabella (Simpson). Graduated with distinction from Bishop's University (History) and McGill University (Law). Served valiantly from 1941 - 1946 as a Lieutenant in the 20th Army Tank Battalion (Sask Horse) and 12th Canadian Armoured Regiment (Three Rivers Regiment) in Italy (Trasimene) and North Western Europe (Liberation of Holland). Dedicated to the promotion of peace and reconciliation, Mr. Murray enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the public service, serving as the Rt. Hon. Lester B. Pearson's advisor at the United Nations during the Suez Crisis of 1956 and as one of Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau's chief advisors on Foreign and First Nation's policy. Retired in 1978 after 30 years of service. In 1999, he was awarded a Membership in the Order of Canada. Mr. Murray's career took him to many parts of the globe, but he was most at peace in his beloved backyard garden in Ottawa, where he could enjoy the songs of birds in summer while he 'puttered' away at his workbench. Friends may visit at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 1200 Ogilvie Rd. at Aviation Parkway on Thursday, August 3, 2006 from 12 noon until service in the chapel at 1 p.m. Memorial donations made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
