David and Susan Jarzen extend our sincere condolences to Anne and to Geoff's family as he was indeed a fine person, geologist, and friend. I (David) recall when I was a Ph.D. student working under the direction of Geoff, that I often , (being a graduate student), ran short of money to support my family of wife and two children. Geoff would frequently "loan" me money to get through a small but important crisis...usually just to hold us over for a day or so. I placed the word loan in quotation marks as on several ocassions when I attempted to pay back the loan, he remarked that I had already paid pack the loan in full. I know that I must have owed him something but he would insist that all was paid.
I am plesed to see that Geoff will be remembered at the University of Toronto in many ways including the schollarship for the Dept. of Earth Sciences for those students who may have financial hardships. Geoff will be greatly missed by us as we will always emember his tutelage and friendship. Photo caption: Dilcher, David, Jarzen, David & Norris, Geoff Gainesville, Florida. April 1, 2006

My condolences to Anne and family. Geoff and you transformed "Jerry´s cabin" on Christian Island in the 1970s and `80s into a lovely comfortable cottage. You were great neighbours! All-time best memory of Geoff was when I was 19 years old and staying at the cottage alone, Geoff also alone next door. Both of us banging away on separate construction projects. During rough weather our boat broke free of mooring. I rushed into the cold lake and successfully saved it. Then, hypothermic, I went in to make tea, and dropped it all on the floor. Just before losing consciousness I went next door, banged on it and stood there, teeth chattering. Geoff took one look, swept me inside, wrapped me in blankets and made a crazy hot fire, kept me that way for the next 12 hours. Wouldn´t feed me hot drinks until I had gradually warmed. Knew what to do from geological surveys in remote Canada. Grateful eternally for Geoff for saving my life that day. Rest in peace, a true gentleman!!
