George BRADY Obituary

GEORGE BRADY February 9, 1928 - January 11, 2019 Our beloved patriarch, George, died quickly and painlessly at home on January 11, 2019. To say that George squeezed out every drop of life is a grand understatement - from surviving the horrors of the Holocaust and losing his entire family, to restarting a new life in Canada. Blessed with 4 children (or as he would say, 3 kids and a girl) he pursued life with great vigour. World renowned for his tenacity and generosity, for George there were no problems, only challenges for which he could always find solutions. He helped hundreds of new Canadians find jobs, homes, and pursue their dreams. He had no time for naysayers or laziness. Our father lived larger than life - from using dynamite to blast rocks at the cottage, to igniting Czech democratic protests in 2016. George's early years are well known through the story of Hana's Suitcase, which follows George and his sister Hana's journey from their Czech home to Terezin and finally to Auschwitz. In George's case - he believed that he survived due to his perseverance and a little bit of luck. He was liberated from the Death March in January of 1945 and returned home to find out that he was the sole survivor of his family. George felt that he should not dwell on the past and chose to make a new life in Canada honouring the legacy of his parents. Three years later, he met a fellow survivor, Joe Seidner, and together they founded Brady & Seidner. As he established the business, George began a busy family life with his first wife Carol and their 3 boys, Douglas, Paul and David. He impressed upon his boys the values he had grown up with, including a spirited appreciation for cottage life and family time. Guests were frequently lulled into a false sense of relaxation with weekend invites to a 'Rock Festival' or 'Woodstock', neither of which had anything to do with music, but rather the literal translation. When he was no longer able to swing a chainsaw, his favourite pastime was to direct others including his kids and grandkids as they cut trees, used the leaf blower, and moved rocks. At 54, George expanded the family by marrying a second time and together with Teresa had a daughter, Lara Hana. The family continued to grow with badly trained but much loved dogs. The arrival of Fumiko Ishioka into George's life in 2000 heralded the next chapter, sharing the story of his sister, and that of his own as a member of the underground magazine at Terezin called Vedem. George believed that these stories transcended faith and belief; encouraging kids and adults alike to explore history and learn more about the consequences of hatred and intolerance. Having, impacted many lives, his story continues to touch people in every corner of the world. George's proudest achievement was his family and their success. He often commented that his parents would have been so proud to see how the Brady clan had expanded after suffering such hardship during the war. Not one to hold a grudge, this was his vindication; that he won out in the end. George was a member of the Order of Ontario, and received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal, keys to Prague and Nove Mesto (his home town), the highest German civilian Order of Merit: the 'Verdienstkreuz am Bande', the Masaryk Society award, the Czech House of Commons award, Post Bellum award, honour from Palace University, and various other honours. He was also very proud of achieving 1st, 2nd and 3rd place (in the same race) for the over 80 category at the Devil's Glen Ski Club Championships. George's legacy is carried on by his wife Teresa; children Douglas (Carol), Paul (Joyce), David (Robin), Lara (Mark) and his grandchildren; Adam, Daniel, Cameron, Everest, Sierra, Nirvana, Khoi, Grace, Isaiah, Elijah, Aaron and Theodore. Special thanks to Teresa for her miracles in keeping George healthy, despite his best efforts to do otherwise and to Marty for those weekly lunches. Forever with a twinkle in his eye, George will be deeply missed. George was the world's biggest optimist - always seeing the glass more than half full. At Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue West (three lights west of Dufferin) for service on Wednesday January 16, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. Shiva to be observed privately. In George's honour, and to continue the important cause he believed in - please consider a donation to the Tokyo Holocaust Education Centre in lieu of flowers. https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/31868

May 16, 2024 Hana's birthday. Mr. Brady, I wish to send you my note. I picked up the book Hana's Suitcase, totally by coincidence last evening, odd how life works, and read it today. I was touched and tearfully moved at your family's story, having recently lost own my Father, an amazing and honorable gentleman, a Korean War Veteran. My husband and I travelled to Japan years ago but were unaware of your life story. We will endeavour to make a second trip to Japan in the future and hope to meet some of the students from the Museum there. You and your sister live on forever in our hearts. You made this world a kinder place. Thank you.

George was the most inspirational person I ever knew. His humility, his humour, his warmth and the way in which he saw the world with tremendous generosity especially after what had happened in his life from the time he was 10 to 17 - the unspeakable losses he had suffered. It is interesting how many extremely religious tributes there are to him on this site, considering how profoundly and compassionately secular he was - how he represented the most transcendent human values without the crutch of any kind of god! I count myself as being very fortunate to have become as close to George and his family as I and my family did. To know him was truly to love him. He is missed beyond any words.

I learned about George Brady when I read the book Hana´s Suitcase to my fifth grade students, Queen of All Saints School, St. Louis, MO. We also saw the play at Edison Theater, and were so happy to hear that George was able to attend. His sister Hana was able to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher through this book. I will always be so grateful for having indirectly known George Brady, an amazing person.

When I was in grade 5, I was introduced to the book 'Hana's Suitcase'. It allowed me to understand the significant tragedies behind the Holocaust and taught me how to become a better person. I remember that I wrote a letter to George Brady immediately after I learned how to write cursive handwriting during class. I was extremely grateful that he replied back to me. Even though I don't know about Hana and George personally, his experiences and advice were valuable and will remain in a special place in my heart. May Mr.Brady rest in peace.

Dear Brady Family,

I am a teacher in Northern Ontario and met George at a teacher conference in Toronto. He had a profound effect on me and helped to shape my teaching practice. I loved his message about writing and how your story is an important one no matter who you are.

He left an indelible mark on me and I'll be forever grateful for him.

Dear Brady Family,

I am a student from St Peter Claver College in Australia, Queensland. I first learnt about Hana and George Brady when I was in grade 6. One of my friends and myself wrote to George asking about Hanas Suitcase and what she was like. Both my friend and I received letters back from George in which we were very grateful and very excited. We showed our teacher who showed the class.

Even though I didnt know Hana or George personally, I cannot help feeling sad that 2 shining stars are gone. They will both be dearly missed.

I send my most sincere condolences

Love from Caitlin.

Dear Brady Family,

I'm a student from Columbus Adventist Academy, Columbus, Ohio, and I just finished reading the book Hana's Suitcase. I learned about George and Hana's life, and I can't imagine how it felt to be in the Holocaust. My class and I just learned about George's death, and we couldn't be sadder. I'm so sorry for his death. I can't imagine how it would feel to learn that your father or loved one has died. I know how kind and loving he was, and I just want you to know that me and my class give you our sincerest condolences.

Love,

Dearest Brady Family,

I just learned of George's death and wish to offer my sincerest condolences to all of you. George was a great man, and I learned this first hand through my father John Gudavicius, who was hired by George and Joe as a plumber in the 60's. I have wonderful memories of being at the Brady cottage as a young girl with my father. George's kindness extended far beyond just family....he made others feel like they were family too. May George rest in eternal peace amongst those who went before him, and may the memory of George's extraordinary, and challenging life, remain the pillar of strength for those whom he left behind. God Bless.

To the Brady's and extended family,

I am very saddened to learn just now of George's passing. I only had the pleasure of meeting him a few times. He was an absolute pillar of a man in how he endured through a horrible past yet rebuilt a wonderful new life in Canada raising such a fine family. He taught not only his family, but the whole world what the meaning of life is - to live it to the fullest, and he did! We all need to be better people, with George as our mentor.

Rest with God now Mr. George Brady.
We will always honour you...

Sincerely,

George Brady visiting Fern Avenue 2010

Every day I hear of yet another brave Holocaust survivors death. My parents, also Survivors, have gone to Gan Eden as well. I have a 5 year old granddaughter who misses her Poppy who passed away in August. I told her that Poppy will live on in her heart for as long as we talk about him and remember the great times we shared. Although I have not read Hannas Suitcase yet, I promise to buy it and put it away for Olivia to read.

Mr. Brady will live on, as will Hanna, because we will pass their stories on to our grandchildren... who in turn, will do the same.

May his memory be blessed and may his soul tied in the knot of life. With deepest sympathy from New Jersey.

George and 1968
After the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia many Czechs and Slovaks arrived to Toronto. George was the first to give us a helping hand in the new continent and life. I've met George on Nov. 9, 1968. During a conversation I mentioned that I left the homeland with two LP records. The very next day George appeared at our rooming house on Mutual St. with a portable record player.
That was the quintessential George.
I'm grateful for the 50 years of a wonderful friendship.
With deepest sympathy to Brady's family

I had the honour and privilege of meeting George during the documentary filming, 2018. He insisted I addressed him by first name. Between breaks we spoke of many facets of the human condition. So wise. So very, very kind. There was not one trace of malice, nor regret. His answer to me and family: "share, and give to others, so our children know how to build". I remain ineffably grateful to Mr. Brady, Family and Mr. Baptiste Cogitore for the courage to remind us of history in such unique facets from one peculiar individual. He ever reminds, teaches us. Most our family lost. Your writings sustain so many, as does Mr. Cogitore documentary. The family of Makochowski/Resh from Rzesow Poland is ever in gratitude. r. Randy R. Makochowski Resh.

Dear Brady family, Dear Teresa, Lara, Doug, Paul and David,

my heart was filled with immense sorrow when I learned that your beloved husband and father passed away on last Friday night. There were still question I wanted to ask him, there were still unfinished stories that I hoped would be continued. But I should not complain - I was blessed to benefit from a number of personal contacts with George, from his vast wisdom a experience. George was a prototype of a great patriot, be it his original homeland or Canada, caring man whose love towards family members was unconditional and limitless, a great fellow bringing joy and amusement to those around him with his peculiar sense of humor, always unselfish and ready to help his compatriots and friends. He could serve as a role model for younger generations for his unwavering moral stands and principles that he honored even in most difficult circumstances which he was sadly all too often exposed to in his life. I and my wife Martina admire him for all these human qualities and will keep in our memories precious time we spent with George when invited to his cottage or discussing politics and societal developments over during our encounters. George will by sorely missed in the Czech community as they loved him for his passion for life, unrelenting interest in the community events and matters and sense of friendship and understanding for others problems.

I, my wife Martina and my colleagues at the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Toronto wish to express to you our deepest sympathy. Memory of Georgelife and his achievements will guide us in our future endeavors.

Dear Brady Family - and a note for Paul:

Sorrow for George's passing. I met George often when Paul and I were friends and students at North Toronto Collegiate Institute. Even today, on my trips to Sunnybrook along Blythwood, when passing that particular street, I always think of Paul and hope that he and his family are well.

George was a great man.

My Sympathies,

Chris P. Kubas,
NTCI, 1981
