On Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital in his 83rd year. Beloved husband of the late Marie L. Reiser (1997). Dear father of George C., Murray S. (Cynthia M.), Brian H. and Alexander M. (Ana). Loving grandfather of Katherine, Leona, Anna, Elizabeth and Christine. Son of the late George A. and Jennie E. Dobbie. George attended Lakefield Preparatory School, 1931-33, Bishop Ridley College, 1934-35, McGill University, 1936-39. Began working with Newlands & Co., Galt in 1939 as Sales Manager, Hand Knit Division. Left Newlands & Co. to join the Royal Canadian Army and served from Private to Captain, 1939-45, R.C.O.C. President of Newlands & Co. 1947-51; President of Dobbie Industries, 1951-77; Chairman of Glenelg Textiles Ltd., 1977-96. Served on Galt Board of Education, 1948-54 and was Chairman for two years. Also served on the Boards of Joy Manufacturing, Canadian Gypsum, Lime & Alabastine, Waterloo Trust, Canada Trust, Dominion Life Assurance, University of Waterloo, Slingsbys Manufacturing Ltd., the Galt Board of Trade and Lakefield Preparatory School. Honorary Director of Domtar Inc., Montreal; Past Chairman of Canadian Textile Institute, Member of Canadian Woollen and Knit Goods Manufacturers Association (President 1956-58); Chairman of Primary Textiles Institute of Canada; Past Vice-President of Canadian Manufacturers Association, the Pacific Basin Economic Council and the Canadian Business and Industry Advisory Council. Currently Chairman of Dobbie Investments Ltd., Swift Airways Ltd. and Willows Ltd. Private family services were conducted at Trinity Anglican Church, Cambridge on Friday, January 19, 2001. Interment Trinity Anglican Cemetery. A Public Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, February 3, 2001 at Trinity Anglican Church, 12 Blair Road, Cambridge at 1 p.m. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation, 700 Coronation Blvd., Cambridge N1R 9Z9.
