George GAFFNEY Obituary

GEORGE FRANKLIN GAFFNEY 1942 - 2021 It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our dearest George in his 79th year. He had led a good life, working hard but loving his play time as well. He touched so many people and earned their respect along the way. George was born in Montreal, the son of George Powers Gaffney and Daisy Marion (Alexander) Gaffney. He attended Loyola for all his schooling years and graduated from Loyola College (now Concordia) in 1964. He leaves behind his wife, Annabelle (McCarthy), their daughter, Meredith Gaffney Stevenson, son-in-law, Dean Stevenson, two granddaughters, Riley and Lola Stevenson, a dear sister Marilyn and husband Bob Quintin, as well as several nieces and nephews. Three days after graduation, George joined the Royal Bank as a management trainee, and began what would be a successful rise within the organization. He held several executive positions and each city the family moved to offered them new experiences and challenges. Moving was his "spice of life", but the 5 years spent in Vancouver as V.P. & General Manager, BC District, were undoubtedly the finest days of his career. After that, George was transferred back to Toronto and took on various senior executive positions until ending his banking career in 2000, as Executive Vice President, Ontario District. George always acknowledged the help and support he received from his wife, Annabelle, and said that his career success was very much attributed to their partnership. Besides a dedication to his work and family, character traits that shone out were a calm determination, faithfulness, honestly, and having a quiet manner interspersed with humour. You could count on George. He was a man of substance. George and Annabelle were married July 26, 1969, in Elgin Ontario. They had met a year earlier in the Rideau Lakes area where George and his Montreal buddies had an annual fishing trip. Saturday night was typically an occasion to attend the local town hall dance. Having consumed more than a few beers during the day, George had enough energy and courage to ask a pretty, young blonde to dance. She declined….he persisted….she caved, and in the end, he hooked a good one. That was the beginning of a love story that lasted almost 52 years. Their one child, Meredith, was born in 1974 and she has made him immensely proud. As a girl, Meredith put up with moving across the country a few times due to her father's career. She became strong and independent from these early experiences. George loved his two beautiful granddaughters (Riley and Lola) very deeply and felt blessed to have a fine son-in-law, Dean. Throughout his career and in retirement, George worked at giving back to the community in which he lived. He served on many charitable organizations and business boards and received several awards for his efforts. George proudly co-chaired the Rick Hansen Foundation for over 25 years. He and Rick had a mutual love of fishing and George was instrumental in founding and orchestrating the annual 'Langara Fishing Challenge' to raise money for SCI research and accessibility programs. In his retirement George enjoyed the warmth of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. He loved deep sea fishing on his beloved boat "Esmeralda", always with his many trusted fishing amigos. Over the years there were numerous tournaments and prize-winning fish - marlin, sailfish, tuna, and dorado. In 2007 he had a lucky catch that landed him the winning fish (largest marlin) in the annual Puerto Vallarta Fishing Tournament. To say the least, fishing was George's passion - Puerto Vallarta in the winter, Haida Gwaii in the summer - always on the water. George also enjoyed spending time on the greens, most happy to beat his son-in-law, Dean, on occasion. Retirement allowed Annabelle and George to travel the world, but of all places, they loved beautiful West Vancouver the most. George loved life. He did not want to go "across that bridge" and fought cancer fiercely until the end. Cremation has taken place and his wishes are for a small graveside service with family. After covid restrictions have been lifted, we will choose a date for a celebration of George's life. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Marck Hudon (G.P.) for his compassionate care, Dr. Paul Klimo for helping George to face and fight stage 4 cancer, and to Dr. S. Tyldesley of the V.C.C. We are also grateful for the community palliative care of Dr. Paul Sugar and to Kim Moscow from Coastal Health. Donations in George's honour can be made to Prostate Cancer BC or to a charity of your choice.

George and I were teammates on the Bantam team at Loyola High. I recall how, at practice the day prior to playing against our arch rival for the championship, one of the players took a shot - one of the few who could shoot "lifters" hard - which caught George and injured him . He was unable to compete in the playoff, replaced by our backup goalie . The series was a 2-game total goals series : initial game at the Montréal Forum , second game back at Loyola the following day. Even though we had a strong team with a superb Jesuit coach with semi-pro hockey experience, our team was apprehensive without George in the nets. Just as we were ready to hit the ice at the Forum, our captain gave us a little pep talk : "...let's win this for George....". We won the initial game at the Forum 12-0 (not a typo), and the next day back at Loyola 6-0. We were City Champs by a combined score of 18-0, and spurred on by our captain's pep talk for George. !

Though Bruce Findlay now has Alzheimers, the moment I told him of George’s passing and he read the obit, he had tears in his eyes and said “He was a such great guy, I loved working with him.” Condolences to you Annabelle, and to Meredith. George was truly one of the kindest of men. He had a sparkle in his eyes every time he said hello. We send heartfelt sympathies on the passing of a true treasure. To you Annabelle, our hugs and affection on the passing of the love of your life. May you find comfort in knowing how many people George impacted, and who had the pleasure of meeting, knowing, and working with George. Bruce and Debbie Findlay, Oakville, Ontario.

Having worked with George for many years I can say with authority that he was simply a class act in all respects. He was very much at ease when speaking with people from all walks of life--someone once told me it was like being wrapped in a warm blanket. A great Canadian who will be truly missed. Annabelle, Anne joins me in extending condolonces at this time of great loss.

George was a wonderful person and our paths crossed many times during our careers at RBC. I first met George when he was VP & GM in Vancouver when I traveled there from Toronto to do economic briefings in the 80's always supportive and helped arranging to get to locations that made a difference. When he arrived in Ontario we continued our friendship and as EVP I reported to him in the early days while I was building RBC Direct investing as CEO. Again very supportive and understanding of my challenge within the organization at that time. We built a common respect and understanding of each other which continued into our retirements from RBC. While i continued to do some consulting that took me out to BC for the next 15 years or so, we would get out together for dinner once a year, never lacking a cocktail or two. He loved his fishing and we spoke of Mexico and Esmeralda, his Grady White in BC and always his love for family. I have missed those get togethers since I stopped getting to BC, I have great memories of a wonderful person. My condolences to George's entire family.

I hold many memories of the cottage on the Rideau, family dinners, and time spent with our whole family together. We have been spread pretty thin across Canada for many years but it hurts like hell to lose someone as dear to me as my Uncle George. He was always so much fun and even if he was my only uncle, he'd still be my favourite uncle. Many virtual hugs to cousin Meredith and Auntie A. I wish we could be there to hug you in person right now. He is irreplaceable. RIP Uncle George. I love you and we send love to the family in BC. See you soon as we are able to.

I have many warm thoughts and memories regarding George. He was quietly strong, modest, outgoing, caring and wise. I enjoyed his wit as well. I am very saddened to hear this news. We were in similar roles at the Bank and our careers kind of followed similar tracks. However, George had a decade or so more experience — so, I tried to absorb his knowledge and welcomed his guidance (directly and indirectly). I admired him from both a personal and professional point of view. God Bless George and his entire family.

Annabelle, I don’t know you but we had something in common, we both loved George. I worked with him in on several occasions during our Royal Bank careers. Before you met George he often came to our little apartment in Toronto for a meal with Diane and me. We moved around Ontario many times and our two daughters, like Merideth became strong and independent. I had lunch with George in Vancouver a number of years ago while visiting 2 sisters there. He was one neat guy and we always had lots of warm thoughts about work and our families.
Diane and I send our condolences and our thoughts are with you and your family.
Robin Moore.
