(April 7, 1945 - March 12, 2026) It is with profound sadness that the family of George Hrycko announces his passing on March 12, 2026, at the age of 80. George passed away peacefully at the Beechwood Court Residence. He encountered several significant medical challenges over the last three years, including Alzheimer's disease. He faced these challenges with determination, grace, strength, and unwavering resolve. He was an extremely proud and doting uncle to his niece, Kristin; and his nephew, Alex (Elaine). He was especially proud of his new grandniece, Estelle, who joined him in celebrating his 80th birthday. He also leaves behind one brother, Oleh; and sister-in-law, Kim. George was also the devoted partner of Luba, his lifelong love and steadfast companion. Those who knew them well recognized a relationship that was defined by affection, humour, and an enduring commitment to one another. Born in Rottenman, Austria, George's parents moved to Canada around 1951 and settled in Toronto. His parents instilled in him the values of discipline, perseverance, civility, and the importance of a good education - principles that would fundamentally guide him throughout his life. George knew early on in his youth that he loved airplanes. He went on to build a long and successful career in the aviation industry. Following the completion of his undergraduate degree from the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (Aerospace Engineering) from the University of Toronto, George began his professional journey at DeHavilland (now Bombardier). Soon after joining DeHavilland, he went on to obtain his Master of Applied Science degree in Aeroelasticity from the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies. He worked in the Aeroelastics Engineering Department at Bombardier until his retirement in 2000. Outside of his professional life, George was an avid golfer, constantly working on his swing, and a once-a-year fisherman. He thoroughly enjoyed these sports, but just as important to him was the camaraderie and lifelong friendships he shared with his golfing and fishing companions, many of whom he had known for over 50 years. George will be remembered for his kindness and selflessness. He never turned anyone away when they asked for help, whether family, friends, or neighbours. Those who knew him could always count on his empathy, compassion, and unwavering support. With his sense of humour and sharp wit, he brought warmth and joy to everyone around him. These are the qualities his family and friends will forever cherish as part of his enduring legacy. A visitation will be held at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel (2357 Bloor St. W.) on Thursday, March 26th, from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. A Panachyda memorial service will be held that evening at approximately 7:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church (3625 Cawthra Road, at Burnhamthorpe Rd.) on Friday, March 27th, at 10:30 a.m. A private family interment will be a later date. The family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be made through donations to the Canada Ukraine Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
