George HUNTER Obituary

George D. Hunter (77) of Ottawa, Ontario, passed away on June 20, 2024. George was born to Lt. Col T. Murray and Phyllis Hunter on May 3, 1947. After graduating from Rideau High School, he played football and studied political science and history at Carleton University before obtaining a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. He went on to a distinguished career as a barrister culminating in his induction into the American College of Trial Lawyers and election as Treasurer of the Law Society of Ontario. Beyond law, George loved hockey, coached several youth teams, and helped bring a men's varsity program to Carleton. He was an avid student of history and politics, particularly as it concerned Canada and our role in the world. A proud son of Ottawa, he combined his passion for hockey and history to bring a public monument commemorating Lord Stanley's Cup to life, which now decorates the corner of Sparks and Elgin Street for all to appreciate. He loved animals (especially his boyhood cat, Ginger; dogs, Bruiser and Henry; and granddogs, Bob and Penny Lane). Most of all, he loved people and lively debate, constantly writing op-eds and arranging telephone calls to discuss the latest political issues at home and abroad. He is survived by his loving partner, Donna Correy; his children, son, Chris (Melanie) and daughter, Kelly; his brother, Malcolm; sister, Sandra Dodgson (Bruce); his many nieces and nephews; and Donna's sons and family, Shane (Rachael) and Trent (Gillian and daughter, Margot). A celebration of life will be held this summer with details to be shared at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ottawa Humane Society or the Paul Correy Memorial Fund.

I had not seen George for 40 years but I recognize him from the photo as the Chair of the Ottawa Hull Chapter of the National and Provincial Parks Association in the 1970s

It was 1963 when George and I first met. Both of us had been "convinced" to join the Canadian Militia - PLDG Regiment - for a summer "Boot Camp" for which we were to be paid the princely sum of $400. We became instant friends as most did with George; he was immensely likeable, even then. We shared our goals as we crawled in the mud - I would be a doctor, he would be a lawyer and we agreed that we would act for each other. Incredibly, that actually came to pass and I became his doctor; he became my lawyer, plus we were ski buds, diners Monday nights at the Prescott Hotel (square pizzas), and enjoying many trips and adventures. Our friendship carried on for years, and, although I left my actual practice in 1990 but carried on as his doctor for a while, eventually he had to find someone better to look after him as my career went international. George always enjoyed a good scotch, a good joke, and a good challenge. He will be missed greatly by his family, his colleagues and his friends, of which I am honoured and grateful to have been one.

George was a special person to me. He was my cousin, someone I looked up too. He gave the toast to the bride at my wedding, gave loving words of memories at each of my parents celebrations of live. He is someone who will be missed by a lot of people. Rip my friend, I will miss you so much.

I am incredibly saddened by the loss of someone who was a very good friend from our days at Carleton and his involvement in our family. I will always remember how kind and caring he was when I went through difficult times.
