George KAY Obituary
MB, CH.B, FRCS (C) JULY 13TH, 1925 DECEMBER 25TH, 2009 DR. GEORGE DAVIDSON KAY Peacefully in Thornhill on December 25th, 2009 at the age of 84. Dearly loving husband, for 54 years, of the late Gloria Violet (Bar well) Kay. Dear brother-in-law of the late Cora Bar well, the late Arthur Barwell Jr. and Anne Barwell. Dear brother of the late David Alan Reid Kay, professor of Materials Science and Engineering at McMaster University and his wife Pamela. Uncle of Helen Kay, Sally (Kay) Blackwell and her husband Geoffrey and David Kay. Great uncle of Jack, Reid and Harry Blackwell. George will be greatly missed by his Barwell family Stephen, Patricia, Bruce (Jennifer). Great uncle of Justin (Laura) and Erik. George was born in Motherwell and lived in Scotland for 26 years before immigrating and becoming a Canadian citizen except for his accent! He studied to become an Orthopaedic Surgeon and when North York General Hospital opened in May 1968 he became Head of the Division of Orthopaedics and held this position for 17 years. He had an excellent reputation as a surgeon. He looked after all orthopaedic cases starting at infancy, and found the variety stimulating. He was founder of the Pennal Orthopaedic Society. George was keen on sports and in Scotland was a known rugby player; a university blue; and over a number of years, very frequently a selected member on representative rugby teams. Having scored his first hole in one at age 16, he was an enthusiastic and competent golfer until late in life. He also took great pleasure in fishing, fine woodworking, reading, bridge and last but not least his single malt scotch collection! His wife Gloria was an accomplished nurse and he was very proud of her achievements. In Gloria's retirement her unique collection of 170 different nurses' caps were donated to the Museum of Civilization, in Ottawa. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday January 14, 2010 at 1 pm at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 140 Brooke Street, Thornhill. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice in George's memory may be made by contacting the R.S. Kane Funeral Home 416-221-1159.
