George William LAWRENCE

IN LOVING MEMORY OF GEORGE WILLIAM LAWRENCE 1927 - 2013 Born in Harbour Breton, Newfoundland, George lived his life from sea to sea. He initially moved to Sydney, Nova Scotia to pursue his education and then moved on to careers in Montreal and Toronto, before retiring in North Vancouver. His final home was in Qualicum Beach with family on Vancouver Island.
George is pre-deceased by their son Dwight, and leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years Beryl, and their children Keith, Lois, Donald, son-in-law Bruce, daughter-in-law Sandy and grandson Justin. He is also survived by his brother Jack Lawrence and his wife Van, and sister Olive Bungay. George had a distinguished career as an electrical engineer and dedicated much of his professional life to the development and improvement of electrical standards.
George occupied a number of positions within Northern Telecom Canada from 1946-1980. He represented the wire and cable industry in the development of the Canadian Electrical Code, and he retired in 1980 as Director of Technology for the Wire and Cable Division.
George joined The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) in 1980 as manager of the Electrical, Electronics and Communications Group. He was then appointed Vice President of CSA's Standards Division from 1983 - 1992, representing Canada at conferences around the world. In 1994 he was honoured with the Jean P. Carriere Award, the highest Canadian tribute available in the field.
One of George's most noteworthy achievements was his success in accelerating the process of standards development to better match the pace of technological innovation.
George retired from CSA in 1992 and joined CESO (Canadian Executive Service Organization) as a Volunteer Advisor and spent time in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil teaching Quality Management.
Square dancing, boating, hiking, fishing, golfing, and world-wide travel were among his many passions, which he enjoyed with his wife, friends and family. He was also an active member of his church.

There will be a beautiful cedar bench placed on the Qualicum Beach seawall by the ocean, in George's honour. Feel welcome to come, sit awhile, and enjoy the ocean view, sunsets, and memories of George.
