George LUSTE Obituary

George Juris Luste August 6, 1940 - March 21, 2015
George passed away peacefully at home in Toronto. He leaves his wife of 49 years Linda Luste (Levering), his children, Tija, Tait and Debbie, 6 beloved grandchildren, and his sister Marg Clarkson. George was born in Latvia, to Mirdza and Leonids Luste, came to Canada in 1948 and spent his early years in Wawa and Montreal. He studied at Mount Allison and Johns Hopkins Universities. He returned to Canada in 1971 to take a position as a physics professor at University of Toronto, where he was also very involved in the Faculty Association in his later years. George's passion was traveling Canada's North by canoe, which he did almost every summer for 55 years, and which resulted in his establishment of an annual Wilderness Canoeing Symposium. His passion for the North also led him to amass a large collection of books on the topic.

In keeping with his wishes, a private cremation has taken place. The family will be organizing an informal memorial in April.
