B PETER HENNESSY

July 10, 2023

On behalf of the HENNESSY family I wish to extend my condolences To George's Family & Friends.
My mother Margaret Hennessy (nee FENWICK) lived in The Dunfield Retirement Residence in Toronto from 2011 until July, 2020.
I met George Earlier but very briefly in Ottawa at The HONG KONG Memorial as we both were laying wreaths. I think George was laying wreaths , first to the POWs and the second to Gander- a great Newfoundlander.
I laid a wreath to my Grandfather, Colonel Pat Hennessy, DSO,MC, RCASC who was SAO, Brigade Headquarters and 2iC of "C Force". Col. Pat was KIA on Victoria Peak on December 20, 1941.
George leaned over to me and said How very nice it was to meet me and your Grandfather was a great soldier.
We met again much later, in the elevator at The Dunfield & in the Bistro with my Mom , Margaret, Col. Pat's daughter-in-law. My Dad was LCol. Brian P. Hennessy, CD, RCASC, Logistics, CAF
George was so very kind to us and just an amazing gentleman and Canadian Hero.
The honour was all mine.
Peter Hennessy,
Sechelt, BC

My early memories of George were when we moved to Montreal in 1966. They were friends of my parents in Toronto since the early 60s. There were sunday roast beef dinners at the Macdonell house in St Lambert and at our house in Westmount. The Macdonells returned to Toronto in the late 60s and I still live in Westmount today. He was an amazing businessman, brilliant and had guts. I modeled myself after him in many ways. There are so many stories to tell that I couldn't get into here. All I can say, is it was a privilege to have known him and to have learned from him and isn't it amazing that he lived 100 years. Mark Moore Westmount Quebec

I had the privilege of meeting George on the commemorative visit to Hong Kong in 2005 with the VAC delegation.
His crisp memory, articulate speech and natural presence as a respected leader were not lost on me. I will not forget him and all his comrades and supporters present.
To his family and friends I extend deep sympathy as we honour this wonderful man and his life's legacy.
RIP and may light perpetual shine brightly.
In God's keeping.

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of George MacDonell. I met George in 2005 as part of a Canadian delegation visiting Hong Kong to honor those Canadians who had participated in the defense of the Colony. Other Canadian survivors of the Battle and subsequent imprisonment were also present in the delegation, each a fine person in their own right, but George seemed to stand out amongst them all. He was a born leader and a true gentleman, his quiet, friendly personality made a very positive and lasting impression on everyone in the delegation. George epitomized what has been called "The Greatest Generation" and our country has become a poorer place since his passing. May God grant this old soldier the peaceful rest he so richly deserves.

Condolences to you all , Paul and Jesse and Tyler . We thought he was immortal . We have many memories of George , Christmas dinner with our two families around the table while one of the fathers carved the bird. When we were building the cottage on Lake Joseph George and Margaret were very supportive and would come up and stay but George usually the second day would say, "Margaret time to go ." He liked the comfort of his mattress at home . He had a wonderful love of life , curious about supporting young people and great communicator . He never stopped challenging himself and others. I remember when my son was learning measurements and he was talking about inches and feet . He said, is that one of George´s feet ? When my sister and I were living in Rome , George and Margaret came over one New Years Eve and took us out for dinner . Little did they know what Romans do . We were running for our lives after our magnificent dinner in a very lovely restaurant, while fireworks rained down upon us . It was very special. We didn´t see much of each other in recent years but the memories live on .
