George MARTIN Obituary

GEORGE EDWARD MARTIN August 23, 1924 - March 6, 2021 George Edward Martin died on March 6, 2021. Predeceased by brothers Jack and Harold, his sister Isobel Swan and his son Paul. He is survived by his wife Shirley and his son David. Born in Melancthon, Ontario on August 23, 1924, George's family moved to Palmerston, Ontario where he met and married Shirley Marie Major, to whom we would remain married for 74 years. While living in Palmerston, a career with The Canadian Bank of Commerce was interrupted by George's enlistment in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. Upon his discharge from the Royal Canadian Navy, George resumed his career with The Canadian Bank of Commerce, a career which was to extend for more than 40 years until his retirement from CIBC in 1982. George and Shirley's journey together would see them move from Palmerston to Ajax, then to Lindsay and finally to Toronto. They were forever thankful for all of the valued friendships and business acquaintances they would make along the way. Cremation has occurred and there will be no funeral service at this time.

Dear Shirley and family, I was so sad to hear of George's passing. I was so touched when you came to see us when my mom passed, it was wonderful to see old friends at times like this. I have so many fond memories of going with Dad to the bank and how kind George was to this circus of little girls descending on his office. We didn't have family in Canada so our parent's friends were like aunts and uncles to us and you both were always so kind and patient with us. Thank you so much for some lovely memories!

My parents were friends of the Martins. George was a colleague of my father's at the CIBC. They both had lifetime careers at the bank, were both in the navy during the war, and both retired within a year of each other. I believe that they all played bridge in the couples club and may have been on some vacations together. Although not personally close to the Martins, I recall last having a very friendly conversation with George in the Heritage room some years ago. My sympathies to Shirley.

As an elder from Knox Church to the Martin Family I spent Many afternoons having a visit with Shirley and many times with George - He was such a gentleman - and I really enjoyed all the visits! They had a beautiful back yard

So sorry to hear of your loss. My father Norman remembers meeting his cousin George a Canadian Sailor when he visited Beragh, Co. Tyrone during the war to meet his Aunt Minnie my Grandmother.
