GEORGE BAILLIE SOUTER

(September 15, 1942 - September 24, 2025) George passed away peacefully, on September 24th, at Victoria Village Manor, Barrie, Ontario, in his 83rd year. He was the beloved husband of Pat (nee MacDonald) for 60 years. Loving father of Geoffrey (Kristin Michie), Brent (Laureen Terrybery), Craig (deceased) and Megan. Cherished grandfather of Matthew and William Souter, Jonah and Bailey Bowers; and step-grandsons, Cameron and Liam MacPherson. George will be deeply missed by the MacDonald family, the Kilgour cousins, his former dental team, patients, students, friends and peers. George was predeceased by his parents, Alex and Merle (nee Kilgour); and brother, James (1945). George was born and raised in North Bay, Ontario. It was in high school that George and Pat first became lifelong partners. George had fond memories of his working summers as a teenager at Keystone Lodge on the French River. He graduated from Chippewa Secondary School in North Bay in 1962 and immediately pursued his passion to become a dentist at the University of Toronto's Dental School (Class of 1967). While attending, he was an active member of Phi Kappa Phi fraternity. George and Pat settled in Barrie in the late 1960s, where he built a practice that ultimately served three generations of patients before he hung up his drill 46 years later. For the last 20 years of his career, George also acted as a clinical demonstrator at his alma mater, where he was ultimately elected into the honorary dental fraternity Omicron Kappa Upsilon for his valued contributions as faculty. George took his civic responsibility seriously, serving on the boards of the Canadian Mental Health Society and the United Way. He was a loyal warden of St. Paul's Anglican Church and an active volunteer at the Royal Victoria Hospital. George loved people, animals, and the great outdoors. He was an accomplished photographer, woodsman, skier, tennis player and not so much a golfer. Many would say a dear friend. George was a friend to man. He was happiest at home or at the cottage, working on projects with the kids. George's tinkering was a legacy he left his sons, not to mention a few tools. The family would like to thank the team at Victoria Village Manor for the diligent, loving care he received as he suffered through his long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Special thanks also to Dr. Mike McConvey, the team of PSWs led by Holly Martin, and the Toronto Memory Clinic. Keeping with George's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the St. Paul's Anglican Church, 54 St. Paul's Cres., Barrie, on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 1 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie.
