George WATSON Obituary

GEORGE GURNEY WATSON 1936 - 2022 Peacefully, in the early morning of August 25, 2022, at the age of 86. Born in Toronto, Gurney was the son of the late William and Frances Watson, and stepson of the late Peter Smellie. Predeceased by his sister, Lynn Watson Foss. He is survived by his half-brother, Jim Smellie (Cathy); his nieces, Heidi Foss and Sylvia Walker (Charles); his nephews, Greg Foss (Julie), Rod Foss (Dominique), Alan Smellie (Alexandra); and 9 grand-nieces and nephews. Gurney was educated at Trinity College School and Ashbury College and subsequently earned his commerce degree from McGill University in 1958. Several university summers were spent as a night auditor at the Banff Springs Hotel, which allowed for lots of early morning and late afternoon golf, and a much-improved handicap! He loved the game, enjoyed the Royal Ottawa and National Golf Clubs, and many golf trips to sunny climates with good friends. After McGill, Gurney headed for the stock market. He was an early advocate of the discipline of Technical Analysis to evaluate investments - a hard sell on Bay Street - but he was an ardent practitioner and good salesman! He travelled widely preaching the benefits of his work, which has become well-accepted. He had a substantial following during his 40+ years on Bay Street, working for several firms, latterly with Merrill Lynch. Special thanks to the staff of Hawthorne Place, who cared for Gurney through the COVID pandemic, and to the medical team at Humber River Hospital. The family will gather privately at Mount Pleasant Cemetery to inter his ashes in the Gurney family plot. Condolences may be made through www.mountpleasantgroup.com.

I knew Gurney when he was at Ashbury. I remember him as a very nice and solid person. Glad to hear he did so well.

Gurney Watson. Not sure what else can be said about this wonderful man. I was just starting my career in capital markets at Midland Walwyn and he along with Dennis Mark introduced me to the science of Technical Analysis. He was passionate about the work. It took me a while to get my head around it but I finally realized its all about gauging market psychology. It was a huge help as I worked first in equity research and then investment banking. As mentioned in other tributes, Gurney always seemed to have time to explain the business to me and just chat about life in general. He was a good friend and one of my mentors in the business. He was definitely one of the good guys on Bay Street.

My condolences,
This note is coming late. I am recalling the wonderful summers with Gurney at Sandy Bay. And remembering his mom and Lynn. I will miss him. With care Sue Nelson.

I started my investment career on Bay St. in 1979 and immediately was amazed at not only Gurney's presentations of Technical Analysis ,but the attention he received from everybody at Greenshields and the street .He always welcomed questions and guidance despite being swamped with questions from the entire firm ,coast to coast .He was generous enough to hand me down his "Red and Blue Books of Happiness" ,the weekly publications of charts which I cherished ,prior to computer generated versions ,but also because of his meticulously drawn notes in them .He was an encyclopedia of knowledge for the study of charts .Shortly after the merger with Richardson in 82 ,he departed the firm but I was always welcome ("Hello Little Fella") to chat about the markets and of course golf .He was a true character and friend to everyone who knew him .RIP my friend .

I met Gurney over 40 years ago and had an instant connection through our mutual interest in technical analysis. I was struck by his immense knowledge of markets and technical analysis as well as his kindness. He was always humble and willing to help anyone that needed assistance despite putting in endless hours analyzing markets. He inspired me to learn and directed me in my career on Bay Street. It was a privilege and an honor to have worked with him for nine years at Pru Bache and Merrill. After what must be hundreds of coffees and lunches together how I wish we could have lunch again. I can't thank you enough for all you did for me. You are a good man and I will miss you dearly. God Bless.

My fondest memory of Gurney is of his falling through the cane/cain seat of the dining room chair at the cottage. "Oh help!" Was all we heard, then saw Gurney wearing the chair & struggling to rise. He was probably in public school & I have not seen him since (though have thought of him often). My regrets at not having kept in touch over the years, but reading his story has filled me in on a life well-lived. I am grateful for that!
My condolences to his loved ones

To the Gurney Watson family. Please accept my sincere sympathy-Gurney was a good friend and colleague both at Green shield and Prudential . He was an invaluable part and contributor to our research department and in my case a good friend from our university days who like myself like more than one beer. John B Newman

Gurney was my godfather and one of my dad´s oldest and closest friends. He would celebrate every New Year´s Eve at our house and visit us at the cottage in the summer. His visits always meant lots of laughs as well as a game of monopoly- he always won. He was a kind and gentle man. He loved his work. Dad and I last visited him on a trip to Toronto about 5 years ago and he was still going into the office. He and dad shared a love of golf and golfed together for many years. He was a very generous and caring friend and godfather. My deepest condolences.

I worked with Gurney at Greenshields on Bay Street in Toronto for over 5 years in the late 1970's. In fact, we shared an office for most of that time. He was truly an interesting, entertaining and somewhat eccentric character! I often think back on those fun times. He is probably entertaining them now up in Heaven! May he rest in peace.
