George David Leslie WATT

George WATT Obituary

(July 2, 1930 August 4, 2011) Husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, friend and accomplished cardiologist, G. David L. Watt was profoundly wise and knowledgeable in matters of the heart. His family is saddened to announce that his own heart stopped beating on August 4, 2011. Loving and beloved husband of 56 years to Mary Louise (Davidge), devoted father to Stephen (Karen), Peter, Ian (Kathy) and Katharine (Mark Kimmins), and grandfather to Trevor and Cameron Watt, Owen and Graeme Watt, and Henry, Charlotte and Lillian Kimmins. Son of Katharine and Dr. G. Leslie Watt, brother to Carol (Ross Gillanders), brother-in-law to the Davidge girls: Betty (Ken Thomson), Grace (Ron Denniss) and Carol (Russ Finch), and uncle to their children. Knowing his own father to be an authentic and truly good man who lived an honest and meaningful life, as David Watt emulated his role model he became an ideal one for his own family. A graduate of Upper Canada College ('47) and the University of Toronto medical school ('54), he was a learned and compassionate man. Possessing deep professional knowledge and experience, he knew that good medicine was based on science and art, and that great doctors treat not just an affliction but tend to the whole person. His own life ended as a natural conclusion of his affliction with Alzheimer's Disease, which he self-diagnosed in its earliest stages while practicing medicine at the Toronto General Hospital and serving as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He immediately retired. Believing in the inherent goodness of others, David Watt dedicated his professional and personal life to the support, teaching and celebration of those near him. An expert sternsman, David Watt went through life just as he paddled the family canoe making strong and correct strokes, paddling in rhythm with his partner, and through foresight, wisdom and experience, knowing when to make imperceptible adjustments so the canoe maintained its true course. A Service of Remembrance will be held at Rosedale United Church, 159 Roxborough Drive, Toronto, on Thursday, August 11 at 2:00 PM. GEORGE DAVID LESLIE WATT, MD, FRCP(C)
